Sahih Muslim 1201h (Book 15, Hadith 94) #10029
Expiation for Infestation of Lice

SUMMARY: This hadith is about Ka'b b. Ujra, who was infested with lice and the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) commanded him to observe fasts for three days or feed six needy persons as a form of expiation.

Ka'b b. Ujra (Allah be pleased with him) reported that he went out with the Messenger of Allah in the state of Ihram, and his (Ka'b's) head and beard were infested with lice. This was conveyed to the Messenger of Allah . He sent for him (Ka'b) and called a barber (who) shaved his head. He (the Holy Prophet) said. Is there any sacrificial animal with you? He (Kalb) said: I cannot afford it. He then commanded him to observe fasts for three days or feed six needy persons, one sa' for every two needy persons. And Allah the Exalted and Majestic revealed this (verse) particular with regard to him:" So whosoever among you is sick and has an ailment of the head".. ; then (its application) became general for the Muslims.

QUICK LESSONS:
Help those in need whenever possible by sacrificing something from ourselves such as fasting or giving away food items in charity .

EXPLANATIONS:
In this hadith, Ka’b b. Ujra went out in the state of Ihram and his head and beard were infested with lice. The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) sent for him and called a barber to shave his head, then asked if he had any sacrificial animal to offer as expiation but he could not afford it so the Prophet commanded him to observe fasts for three days or feed six needy persons, one sa’ for every two needy persons instead. Allah then revealed a verse particular with regard to this incident which became general application among Muslims that whoever among them is sick and has an ailment of the head can do this form of expiation as well. This hadith teaches us that charity is an important part of our faith and we should always strive to help those in need whenever possible even if it means sacrificing something from ourselves such as fasting or giving away food items in charity.
