I have been very busy as of late with a wonderful new job working as a Software Tester and my schooling.  My husband and I have had little time to breath lately.  He'll be having another surgery soon and then we've both decided for our health to undergo the Lapp band surgery.  Its scary and exciting, but if we don't do something now, the health consequences will be long and dire.  Luckily, Mat's insurance covers the surgery.

I stopped by today to check out the numerous topics and get a peek into the lives of some dear friends.  I'm glad to see very little has changed  and that most of you are doing well.

Summer is coming quickly here in Utah, but the Winter Snows keep sneaking in.  Meaning, I have a cold.  One day its in the high 70s/ low 80s and the next day, I'm cleaning 4 inches of snow off my Sentra.

I've been thinking about you all alot lately.  I hope this note finds you all well.  I pray for you all regularly.

I'm happy to hear you are doing well, Angela.  My computer crashed and I'm temporarily using David's laptop.  I'm quite anxious to get mine back from the "shop".  I read where Mat is having surgery....and I hope it's nothing serious.  Dave just had surgery on Tuesday, but he's feeling better and "hanging in there".  I'm sure he'll be fine.

What's the Lapp band surgery? I've never heard of it.

Hope your cold clears up soon. I know what you mean about the weather.  In Maine we just had 18 inches of snowfall yesterday. And now it's back up in the 40s with full sun.  The snow is melting like crazy!  Don't know what to expect from one day to the next.

Take care and enjoy your job and your life!

Hi Angela

Thanks for dropping by. As you know I am not very regular myself, but it is great that we still have time to enquire about each other.

This truly is a blessing, caring about people whom we only met in the cyber world.

I pray for a speedy recovery for both your husbands (you and sister Patty)

Take care

Peace

Dear Angela,

Nice to hear from you and boy am I surprised about the Lapp Band surgery that you are planning.  Yes, it is less expensive than what I will suggest, but please consider my suggestion.  Since you both have the same problem, you can work on it together.  You will still have to work on it after the surgery, and the consequences of the surgery are expensive to deal with as well.

What about a get-a-way resort to deal with this?  Yes, it's expensive, but you could work on the real underlying problems which caused this, which you will still have to deal with after the surgery.

I'm talking about a weight reduction place that's seriously geared to helping you both change your behavior and attitudes toward the culprits of food and metabolism and environment et cetera.  Working together with good modeling and instruction seems like a great way to go.  And you'll be much closer for it, In Shah Allah.

Love,

HJ

Hello Angela,

I haven't been be here much lately as well, and don't you think that the Lapp Band surgery is a rather harsh way to lose weight? I agree with Herji, it is expensive and sometimes not the way to go.

I lost 40 lbs by going on a nearly fat free diet except for olive oil and fish and flax seed oil and following the advice of the prophet: with regards to the contents of your stomach: 1/3 water, 1/3 food, 1/3 air.

It worked, and it stays off. Get rid of the refined sugar, packaged foods and go back to cooking with whole grains. Eat more fresh fruits and vegetables.

My daughter has a diet plan called the Book of Mormon diet. She follows it and is stil svelte at the age of 32 and 2 kids. In my family the women seem to take after the husky farmer's wife body type with the oversized chest. She is a marvel.

May Allah (swt) keep you and your husband safe and in good health!

Mariyah

My husband is having back surgery, he's got a bulging disk in his lower back.  We see the specialist for the first time May 4th.

As for the Lap Band, this was no made easily.

My mother in law died from gastric bypass surgery.  When Mathew and I began discussing options there were several things we considered.

First, we both must lose over 100 lbs to reach healthy weights.

Secondly, exercise is hard due to his back and my arthritis, even walking for him is extremely painful.  When we do grocery shopping, he always has to ride one of those carts because its too much walking and his legs turn to fire.

Thirdly, we've tried diets before, healthy foods, cutting out soda, fats and eating out.  We worked hard on it, but portioning is always a problem.  Especially since Mathew is a compulsive eater and I don't have a normal metabolism from the PCOS.

It is a radical approach and not one we've chosen lightly.  My hips and knees, already damaged from years of volleyball, are straining with the arthritis and my weight.  His back will never fully heal without a dramatic weightloss.  Our Doctor has pointed to things like sleep apnia (spelling??), depression and high blood pressure that are hurting us now.  He has also pointed out, that our weights may be why we are childless.  His suggestion was surgery.

The Lap Band, unlike some of the other surgeries is reversible.  Its not as invasive as gastric bypass because there is no cutting of the stomach.  Its done by lapryscopy and is outpatient surgery.

My scare with the in my thyroid in September and October really made me evaluate my health and what I need to do.  It doesn't help that I'm staring down the barrel of 30 this year too.  My mother didn't do anything about her weight and at 49, she's completely disabled.  I don't want to be in a wheelchair like that before I'm 50.  And my paternal Grandfather died this past winter from cancer and heart disease that left him too weak to battle either.

As for the Book of Mormon diet (you mean Chuck a Rama after breaking fast on Fast Sunday????)??  No, actually, I'm going for a more asian approach to the dietary change.  I am also adding essential oils, vitamins and exercise into the routine.  I found this thing called a Bean.  Its an inflatable cushion used like the pilates ball, but it supports your back.  It will make exercising easier for Mat and me.

I'm so glad to hear that you're all doing well and I'm very thankful for your caring responses.  God Bless you all.

I live in Utah and don't own my own house.  Meaning, I have a polluted lake, the snow capped filled reservoirs (burrrrr), or private gyms to swim in.  Public pools here are VERY crowded and aren't open but for a few months every year.

Have you ever priced a membership to a gym?  Its about $50 a month and you have to sign a year contract with heavy cancellation fees.  So, yes, I have....LOL

Welcome back Angela, wow..it's been ages since I read your last post. I don't know if you would believe in medical machines like Ionto using current to increase the level of endorphin and metabolism. It does really a good job but usually the machine is pretty expensive and have to be used under strict control.

I'll have to check it out.  I'm sure they are expensive.  Many things like that haven't made it to the US yet.  Good to see you are well Pauline.

No, the community pools aren't indoor in my area.  Only the private gyms and schools have indoor pools.  You have to be members of the gyms, or a student at a school to get in to the indoor pools.  All the public pools are outdoor.  That really sucks.

Bountiful has an indoor pool, but I'm living in Provo, 50 miles away.  And so I can't get a membership to their community center.

Trust me.  I want to be able to swim for many reasons.  I grew up near a lake, with a swimming pool at my house and a community center 10 miles away.  I swam all the time growing up.

Hard to believe looking back how active I really was as a kid and teenager.  Being an adult stinks.....I want to be 16 again.  LOL

that's for sure!

well you need to come my country, pools everywhere and you don't need to be a member! my local pool it cost 3.50 for the use of the pool and you can use it all  provided that you don't leave  for spa & sunna that's extra. when i go i usually get swim and spa and locker, you get money back on the locker. The gym you used to have to be a member, they still got it but now they have individual visits at $16.00 also, which is good because i never fulfill membership time, i tend to start off good but then wane and i lose the money, and then i feel that to get monies worth i should be there everyday So since i don't finish the time span and waste money i refuse to join as a member  and besides its gone up it was $180 which was the cheapest around actually, but gone up over $200.

Assalamu Alaykum,

I'm a guy, it was out of curiousity that I'm here at the ladies forum, as to see what topics attract your attention most.

As usual I found you people are very emotional and I do like the way ladies get to be loving and wonderful, I'm too, impressed by ur support to Angela and Patt.

I do extend my support and sympathy to Angie on the surgery of her and and her husband , and pray to Allah that the operations will give fruitful results.

And to patty, would say I have read some posts of peeps supporting you against some attacks of (a person) in the discussion forum (think he/she is a muslim); first of all I would stand by your side if he/she just attacks you for your beliefs or so, and would assure you that Islam is not like that and it does not encourage us to do so, on the contrary Islam  put great stress upon being polite and respect others' beliefs, specially if they are of (ahlukitab) the people of the book (christians and jews) we are not supposed to hate people because of their beliefs.plz accept my appology as a muslim for what he/she does, bad deeds do not have a religion, people from different religions can do it.

pleased to be in this forum,

Salam to all
