Assalaamualaikum

My opinion:
We are accountable for our speech. Allah dislikes vain talk. In the name of "freedom of speech", people say whatever they want and hurt whoever they want. Yes we all can have different viewpoints. We should speak against only those things that are opposing Allah and His Messenger. (and that includes speaking against injustice of any kind).

I would like to add some verses and hadith on speech.

Allah says:

They shall not hear therein (in Paradise) any Laghw (dirty, false, evil vain talk), but only Salam (salutations of peace). And they will have therein their sustenance, morning and afternoon. (See (V.40:55)).
(  سورة مريم  , Maryam, Chapter http://www.searchtruth.com/chapter_display.php?chapter=19&translator=5 - #19 , Verse http://www.searchtruth.com/chapter_display.php?chapter=19&translator=5#62 - #62 )

"And when they hear AlLaghw (dirty, false, evil vain talk), they withdraw from it and say: "To us our deeds, and to you your deeds. Peace be to you. We seek not the ignorant."
(  سورة القصص  , Al-Qasas, Chapter http://www.searchtruth.com/chapter_display.php?chapter=28&translator=5 - #28 , Verse http://www.searchtruth.com/chapter_display.php?chapter=28&translator=5#55 - #55 )

No Laghw (dirty, false, evil vain talk) will they hear therein, (in paradise) nor any sinful speech (like backbiting, etc.).
(  سورة الواقعة  , Al-Waqia, Chapter http://www.searchtruth.com/chapter_display.php?chapter=56&translator=5 - #56 , Verse http://www.searchtruth.com/chapter_display.php?chapter=56&translator=5#25 - #25 )

So leave them to plunge in vain talk and play about, until they meet their Day which they are promised.
(  سورة المعارج  , Al-Maarij, Chapter http://www.searchtruth.com/chapter_display.php?chapter=70&translator=5 - #70 , Verse http://www.searchtruth.com/chapter_display.php?chapter=70&translator=5#42 - #42 )

"And we used to talk falsehood (all that which Allah hated) with vain talkers .
(  سورة المدثر  , Al-Muddathir, Chapter http://www.searchtruth.com/chapter_display.php?chapter=74&translator=5 - #74 , Verse http://www.searchtruth.com/chapter_display.php?chapter=74&translator=5#45 - #45 )

==================================================

Our words and actions are being recorded:
"Kiraman (honourable) Katibeen writing down (your deeds)" ,
(  سورة الإنفطار  , AL-Infitar, Chapter http://www.searchtruth.com/chapter_display.php?chapter=82&translator=5 - #82 , Verse http://www.searchtruth.com/chapter_display.php?chapter=82&translator=5#11 - #11 )

There is no human being but has a protector over him (or her) (i.e. angels incharge of each human being guarding him, writing his good and bad deeds, etc.)
(  سورة الطارق  , At-Tariq, Chapter http://www.searchtruth.com/chapter_display.php?chapter=86&translator=5 - #86 , Verse http://www.searchtruth.com/chapter_display.php?chapter=86&translator=5#4 - #4 )

==================================================

Prophet(saw) said:

Narrated 'Abdullah: The best talk (speech) is Allah's Book 'Quran), and the best way is the way of Muhammad, and the worst matters are the heresies (those new things which are introduced into the religion); and whatever you have been promised will surely come to pass, and you cannot escape (it).  (Book http://www.searchtruth.com/book_display.php?book=92&translator=1&start=0&number=382 - #92 , Hadith http://www.searchtruth.com/book_display.php?book=92&translator=1&start=0&number=382#382 - #382 )

Narrated Abu Musa: Some people asked Allah's Apostle, "Whose Islam is the best? i.e. (Who is a very good Muslim)?" He replied, "One who avoids harming the Muslims with his tongue and hands."  (Book #2, Hadith #10)

Narrated Anas: Allah's Apostle was neither a Fahish (one who had a bad tongue) nor a Sabbaba (one who abuses others) and he used to say while admonishing somebody, "What is wrong with him? May dust be on his forehead!"  (Book http://www.searchtruth.com/book_display.php?book=73&translator=1&start=0&number=72 - #73 , Hadith http://www.searchtruth.com/book_display.php?book=73&translator=1&start=0&number=72#72 - #72 )

Narrated 'Abdullah bin 'Amr: The Prophet said, "A Muslim is the one who avoids harming Muslims with his tongue or his hands..."  (Book http://www.searchtruth.com/book_display.php?book=76&translator=1&start=0&number=491 - #76 , Hadith http://www.searchtruth.com/book_display.php?book=76&translator=1&start=0&number=491#491 - #491 )

according to me, freedom of speech ends where religion begins

In my opinion nothing is free....

Since we have laws which govern things how can we saying something is truly free? In my opinion we have the "little space" to move in society, hence speech is the little room to move in.

Salaam,

Freedom of speech is taken for granted.  It is a valuable freedom, which if used with discretion (as someone stated earlier), it is an intrinsically valuable asset.  Freedom of speech doesn't mean go out and curse everything 'because you can', and if someone does act in such a way, they're level of maturity is challenging a 3-year old.  It means, rather, that everyone has the right to speak out.  And when I say discretion, I mean that one should only speak out if they find it necessary to do so.

No, I don't think someone has the right to insult religion. I do, however, think that every person has the right to criticize. It's how we learn.

Yes, we can ever and only act within our own capacities, it's terribly hard for the filty to escape their filth and the simmering ailment to offend the naturally better endowed.

That's a sheer law of life.

Just as people are free to slander at will, call people denigrating names based on their race or ethnicity, lie about what other people have done, and spread malicious and counterproductive gossip, should they be allowed to mock and denigrate a person based on their religious beliefs. Whether by cartoon, media mania, or word of mouth.

yes allah allows for freedom of speech.  he tells us to handle it by simply saying peace to the evil ones that would say things about god and his prophet.

also, he reminds us several times that there are those who will hide the truth.  you do that thru speech, writing, cajoling, jewing or any other method.

so yes we believe in freedom of speech.  just watch what you say, as everything is recorded in a clear book.  that's what makes you responsible and is of course a high form of piety.\
