 As-Salaam alaikum,
All said and done, there appears to be a difference between extravagance (Israaf) and Wastage (Tabzeer). To spend more than is neccessity in areas where spending is permissible is termed Israaf.  Allah Ta'ala says in the Holy Qur'an:--
''Eat and drink but do not waste'' (7:31)  Eating and drinking are neccessities of life and to spend in/on them is permissible; but spending extra on them is called Israaf.

To spend in those areas wherein spending is not permissible is called Tabzeer. Allah Ta'ala says in the Qur'an:--
''Those who are extravagant are the brothers of Shaytan" (17:27)... because one assists Shaytan by spending in/on impermissible areas.
