hello friends

how would you define internet addiction?

don't you think some of us in this forum have got addicted to internet?

it has become difficult for some to spend a single day without internet.

instead of dictating terms to a machine, a machine is dictating terms to us.

Someone should start a specialist forum for internet addicts....Somewhere they could go every hour of every day to discuss their addiction to the internet with fellow internet addicts.... ;---)

Salman, I'll tell you my little secret...I'm actually half man and half computer... I have special patented bionic USB interface terminals that run from my feet via cables to the back of my PC. So you see, with me is not simply a matter of internet addiction...I've tried getting away from my machine but just end up sprawled on the floor in a tangled mess of wires and sockets.

COLIN stands for: Computer Operated Linked Intelligence Node

Don't tell Bill Gates or he'll send out his spies in order to rip off my cutting edge technological functionality....

Assalamu alaikum,

Addiction is usually defined as something one can't do without, usually something bad or evil (smoking, drugs, looking at porn, gambling...).  Addiction to the internet is only bad or evil if one is looking at/reading/interacting with things that are bad for ones nafs or haraam.

If one is browsing porn, reading or looking at haraam things or otherwise using the internet to feed their lusts or corrupt their souls, then I would call that an addiction.

Dropping into an Islamic forum each day, reading tafsir, browsing world newspapers, finding out about our religion, using interactive programs to memorize Qur'an or learn Arabic - all these things might be considered as good for one, so I can't see that doing them is an addiction.

Peace, ummziba.

sister ummziba, don't you think that internet addiction may not always mean addiction to haraam things on the net?

some people get addicted to the net for different reasons which are not haraam.

such people are not able to spend even a day without internet.

Assalamu alaikum Salman,

I would only call it internet "addiction" if the person is on the net so much that other areas of life are becoming ignored or not done.  For example, if the person is missing salat, forgets to read Qur'an, gets behind in their work, doesn't take time for fresh air and exercise, and so on.

I don't believe just being on the net everyday constitutes an addiction.  It is only when other areas of life suffer that too much internet is not a good thing!  As with everything in life: moderation is the key!

Peace, ummziba.

Assalamu Alailkum

Sister Ummziba, you are absolutely right.  That is the way any addiction is determined.  How it affects your life overall.  Is it causing you to avoid doing the important things in life?  Are you not doing other rewarding things in your life that used to be rewarding in a positive way?  As a person who has no Ummah, I do use the net everyday to stay in touch with other Muslims and to learn about Islam.  Alhamadulillah I have the internet because if I didn't have it, I might not have entered Islam yet.  Only Allah knows best.

Colin...

Well if its affecting you to that extent......

I'd say you are addicted to this forum and cannot live without knowing what is being said here, THAN being addicted to the internet

Do you have work or school to go to in the day, how are you doing in that, if not good then I suggest that you stop with the all nighter with reading

You have put you body clock at of whack that is why you are feeling depressed, here.

Is really, I mean really important that you have to read ALL replies?

Or are you worried that you are going to miss out on somethng so you keep going with the reading and may reply ? I myself was doing that for a bit but then I realise well I do not have to with Everything, this was in the earlier days but I don't do that anymore, if something happens it happens, there is no need to attend everything

Colin, is U.S. economy on the decline?

I thought americans were rich in terms of economy.

you are asking an Indian for a million dollar loan, that surprises me.

he is an american.

i say this because in the discussions ' why do you dislike U.S.' he was supporting U.S. very much.

he was giving such informations about U.S. which made it clear that he is an american.

You're right Salman, I should have asked you for a 44.570 million Rupee loan....

BTW. Just because I have supported the US against some of your inaccurate and sweeping anti-US statements doesn't mean I must be American. No more than anyone should assume that I'm a Muslim for defending Muslims from unfair or untruthful comments made against them. For the sake of clarification, I'm British, English to be exact.

You're correct AK, we should have colonized the whole world. Let's face it, it would have made atlases much cheaper to buy if they were only printed in one colour.

Bismillah,

To the original topic you posted Brother Salman,

Why don't you listen to what Sisters Ummziba and Khadija posted?  They told you the correct definition of addiction.  Brother AK then jokingly represented jokingly what a pretty bad habit would be, but according to the definition of addiction given by the sisters, his description was still just lack of priorities and bad habits.

Food and water are necessary and they are not addictions or bad habits.  The Internet, and specifically this forum, provides an Islaamic community to those of us who would otherwise have none.  For others it is just an enhancement, like a flower on the table.  But for some of us it is as important as the food and water that we need to live.

Peace.

Assalamu alaikum,

Very excellent point, Sis Herjihad!  This place really is like 'family' to some users and certainly these cyber friends are very important to those who don't live near an Islamic community.

Peace, ummziba.
