Can someone help me understand why wanting to end life, a life that is nothing but pain, is forbidden.  I understand the desire to hold life sacred.   I also understand the slippery slope argument.  However, on a case by case basis, why is suicide unacceptable?

Schmikbob your question is a moral issue, therefore will an answer from an Islamic perspective be helpful?  Additionally, I assume when you say 'nothing but pain' you are not speaking metaphorically, and you mean physical illness and the like.  Anyway, although suicide is forbidden in Islamic law, there is a compelling argument amongst Muslim scholars that suicide be viewed on a situational basis as you suggested, but with respect to punishment or forgiveness in the next life.
