{He created the heavens without pillars that you see and has cast into the earth firmly set mountains, lest it should shift with you, and dispersed therein from every creature. And We sent down rain from the sky and made grow therein [plants] of every noble kind.} (Luqmān 31:10)

Mount Olympus, Mars holds the record of the tallest mountain in the Solar System at 21,171 m

Mountains are land formations that are useful for people in many ways including forestry, logging, rainfalls, glaciers, rivers, lakes, ponds, tourism, recreation, mountaineering, camping, hiking, skiing, mining and even strategic tactical protection.

Earths tallest mountain is Everest at 8,848 m. However, Mount Olympus on Mars holds the record of the tallest mountain in the entire Solar System known to Man (21,171 m).

Interestingly, mountains cover 1/5 of Planet Earths terrestrial surface, and occur in 75% of the worlds countries.

Beside the numerous benefits we get from mountains, they can still pose many challenges. For example, mountainous terrain requires more difficult engineering and higher costs to plant infrastructure than on plain ground. The southern European country of Andorra is the sole country in the world which doesnt have airports, and the reason is that the countrys entire terrain is mountainous, making it unable to receive landings.

Satellites also find it more difficult to peer into mountains than regular crust. Mountains are generally not suitable habitat for agriculture. Higher elevation also witness less protection against Ultra Violet rays and harmful solar radiations, not to mention lower levels of oxygen which, at such altitudes, could cause Acute Mountain Sickness Hypoxia.

I don't understand what the people at OnIslam are trying to accomplish with this webpage.  Basically, they take a random passage from the koran which happens to contain the word "mountains", then post a bunch of random facts about mountains.

What is the point of that webpage???

Hello Reepicheep,
Greetings!

Those who believe in the Quran or are at least neutral in understanding the Quran, and who possess the basic knowledge of general sciences, would find such articles easy to understand.

Allah says in the Quran:

Soon will We show them our Signs in the (furthest) regions (of the earth), and in their own souls, until it becomes manifest to them that this is the Truth. Is it not enough that thy Lord doth witness all things?

Qur'an 41:53

Therefore, by looking at His signs in His creations, His power and compassion is appreciated in a better way.

The article demonstrates how useful the mountains are in our daily lives.

To recognize His blessings, let us now ask ourselves some questions:

Can we build another Mount Everest with all its characteristics? And if we ever can, what resources would be required for the purpose?

Here we are using all the bounties of His creations. He is not asking us to pay anything in return. Shouldnt we at least recognize and be thankful for His enormous compassion for us all?

May Allah guide us all.

Peace

The word "mountain" no doubt appears in other books which some people consider to be divinely inspired.  On that ONISLAM webpage, if the passage from the koran was replaced by a similar passage from (for example) "The Book of Mormon", do you believe that this would provide evidence that the Book of Mormon was divinely inspired?

Hello Reepicheep,
Greetings!

Please discuss comparative subject in the Interfaith section. Briefly speaking, to figure out whether the Quran is divinely revealed, please read it and try to understand it entirely with a neutral mind. May Allah guide you in your quest.

Peace
