Subject: Cats and Islam

The subject of cats in the home came up recently.  I am an avid cat lover so it was a concern for me as to what Islam says about cats.  I thought I would share with you all the things I found.

From this website, http://cats.about.com/cs/tabbycats/a/tabby_cats_2.htm - http://cats.about.com/cs/tabbycats/a/tabby_cats_2.htm  I found this quote:

Mohammed and the Tabby

Islam legend tells us that Mohammed loved cats. One story says that he once cut off a sleeve of a garment when he had to leave to attend prayer, rather than to disturb his cat, Muezza, who was sleeping upon the sleeve. It is said that the reason he loved cats so much is that one once saved his life when a snake crawled into his sleeve. (This may be a variation of the well-known Muezza story.) Legend also claims that Mohammed bestowed on cats the ability to always land on their feet. A writing of Mohammed tells about his vision of a woman punished in Hell for starving her cat to death. These stories have all come down to the assumption that the "M" symbolizes the enormous esteem which Mohammed felt for cats and that the sight of the "M" on a cat's forehead invokes memories of Mohammed. In any case, cats today are still generally protected and respected in the Islamic world, and are even permitted inside mosques.

I also found more information on this website:

http://www.islam-qa.com/index.php?ref=7004&ln=eng - http://www.islam-qa.com/index.php?ref=7004&ln=eng

Inshallah you all find this as informative as I did.

As-salaam alaykum warahamatullah

Jazakallahu for sharing this topic with us.I personnaly have known that Islam permits the keeping of cats as pets because of his Sahaabah,Abu Hurayrah but stillwished to learn more about it because of the superstitions attached to it.Well, may be not all over the world but in my home country. As regards the "M" sign on the Cat's forehead,i haven't heard or read anything about that unti now.You know Cats have the ability of knowing someone's going to die(especially if the person's sickly) and they now avoid such person.I read a news in Yahoo of recent about some hospital, using a cat to detect if a patient would survive or not. This was after they had observed the cat stayed away from a few patients who now died afterwards.

In my home country however, you can't help but listen to the 'aupernatural powers' attached to cats. They think they're'evil' especially if they're black&that it's some witch that controls it.Kids (even i) grew up with such believes & was only able to overcome the phobia for Cats after I had a better understanding of Islam, alliamdulillah!I really wish to understand this creature better because besides dogs,it's about the only domestic animal i can keep as a pet.But i prefer them fluffy&white.Sorry if i went off-topic!

I read quite the opposite about cats and their "6th" (Ill bet they have far more!) sense about impending death.  In the article I read it claimed that cats would go and sit or lie down with someone who was terminally ill or approaching death from old age.  Apparently this behaviour has often been observed in nursing homes. *

I know from many experiences that my cats will stay very close to me if I am ill or upset.

*   Mind you, the idea of all those little old ladies putting their moggies out in the street because they insist on staying too close kind of worries me!!!

P.S. Just a little story I would like to share:  I shared a lovely smile with an old man at a bus station recently in Morocco when he saw that I was paying attention to a mother cat and her almost grown kitten. It was just one of those "wordless" moments that we pass by all too often.  C

I have a friend who is deaf. She was sleeping in her apartment. Her cat, Lady, woke her up in the middle of the night. She got up and as soon as she got up, the ceiling of the apartment crashed and fell down!

Animals are incredible.. Many animals before the Tsunami hit left the low land areas and headed up to higher ground. Some catpive elephants who were at the moment, not chained, left. And as they went up the hill the grabbed some children and carried them up the hill. We can learn somethin from all of Allah's creatures.

Okay.. off topic

Actually, I think it is great to talk about how amazing Allah's animals are.  I have read many of those stories too.  I think especially if you give a lot of love devotion to animals, then in their way, they pay you back for all of that.

I got a kitten myself and she loves to follow me around the house wherever I go.  I never feel alone with her to remind me of her presence and needs.

alsalam alaikum,

Ok, now that is an interesting, lovely and happy subject,

Well, now I guess Salams_wife will say that she wants to get a cat too and call her some fluffy name or something and then wants to keep her cat in her home and make her husband even more jealous, I wish if I know how women think, ok Salams_wife, since you are trying to raise a cat in your home then I will try to raise a dog in my home and we will see who is going to win!! the dog that I will raise in my home or the cat that Salams_wife will raise in her home,

Someday we will see, it seems like a battle between men and women is going to start here!

Thank you very much,

Best regards,

alsalam alaikum,

Her_Husband

I know this is an old post but... i love kitties too! :D and I just wanted to share a story with you.

I happen to have... a few cats.  My husband and I picked them each together.  Currently we are away from eachother (not by prefrence) but I still have to kitties to keep me company while we are apart.  Since we got them each when they were kittens they all have small individual personalities that take a little from each of us.

One of my cats, Chips, the youngest became very sick.  He was loosing weight like crazy. the vet did test after test, and couldn't tell me exactly what was wrong or how to help.  Surgury was mentioned, though not recommended because it would most likely kill him in his condition. So, the vet reccomended putting him to sleep. I took him home, and tried my best to keep him comfortable. I bought him all kinds of treats and special cat food (that made the other cats jealous, but i had to get him to eat, he was starving to death with food under his nose) I searched and searched for an answer, if putting an animal to sleep was acceptable. The closest I came to an answer was that assisted suicide for humans is absolutely not acceptable, and given the same reason, I decided it was the same for animals. It was devistating to watch him wither away, but I know that Allah is not cruel, and when it was the right time, he would take Chips.

One night, after Chips had become so skinny that he could only walk when absolutly neccisarry, I remember saying to him (more to myself, but out loud) that it would soon end, and he would be in a place of comfort and happiness.  I told him how all this pain would go away, how he could eat as much as he wanted and have all the toys he could think of. In the middle of explaining this to him (and myself) I was overwhelmed with tears.  I lay back thinking it over and over, praying that his suffering would end.

Then, the most amazing thing happened.  Chips, so weak that he couldn't walk unless he really really needed to, pushed himself up, and dragged himself over to me. He lay his head on my chest with his paws wrapped around me in a small kitty hug.  He lay like that for a while, (and I know cats don't like that position)  then he pushed himself up again and when back to his spot by my feet.

So many things came to mind when that happened. But first and foremost in my mind was recalling that Allah controls all animals.   Here I was praying for Chips' pain to end (and mine for I was sufferying for him)  and I get what I beleive to be a hug sent from Allah through my cat.

I know some may say it sounds silly, but I truely beleive thats what it was.  I know many people have worse problems, but at the time, being away from my husband, I needed a hug at that moment so badly and I didn't even no it till I got one.

There is no God but Allah. All Praise and Thanks are to Allah.

Agreed some people or even most might think it's some silly thought. And you know there's no coincidence in Islam.Everything happens biqaddar'llah! And we view things differently.Let me just say that, that sounds very typical of my evaluation.I would see it more as Allah listening&granting my wish at that moment than a mere incident of no meaningful interpretation.
Allahu Akbar!!!

That is such a touching story.  I can understand how difficult it was to make that decision.  There was one cat I had for 5 years when she got ran over.  I had no idea what to do with her since I lived in rental house and I had no where to bury her.  I ended up taking her to a animal hospital where she was cremated and her ashes were spread on a stretch of deserted beach by the hospital with other cremated pets.  Now it makes me wonder if that was Islamically okay though I wasn't muslim at the time it happened.  I was so hurt and upset and had no idea what to do.  I thought at least her remains would be in a beautiful place.

Inshallah you will not have to go through such a painful experience again.

Hi,

I love cats too.

In fact my mum ever told me a story about her neighbour who hate cats so much, cos at times the cats pee or poo at his doorsteps. One day he went bizzarre and took 1 of the cats in a brown sack bag and hit it hard with a woood. How cruel is he!!!!!!
A few months later, his son got hit by a group of teenages. They cover his face with a brown sack bag, to suffocate and hit him with a baseball bat.
Um....retribution I guess.
My mum often tells me, never hurt animals esp cats cos there will retribution. Wonder its true?

Welcome sasha7604.In my Home country, there're so many myths attached to Cats.Mysteries that even scares older people. The reason being that,it is somewhat believed they are used by witches&wicthcraftcy.I was under this delusion until I had a better understanding of Islamic teachings on care of animals&'Abu Hurayrah' made that superstition'bout Cats a thing of the past. But till date, sometimes, the sight of a Cat brings chills all over me.kindda develop a goose pimple. But I don't hate them. We've been having a visit from a Cat in the neigbourd for a couple of weeks now&my son likes to play with it....i fed it the first 2times it jumped through our fence..I think it just needed someone to play with as it comes&goes.
If a Cat is near a sick person,it runs away if that person is going to die....one of the many stories we've read'bout Cats....

I myself am an avid animal-lover. . . .and cats ofcourse are another of Allah's magnificent creations. I always say that a home without pets is boring! lol. Plus, caring for an animal, and providing properly for it is Sadaqah.

I dont think any of the things about the "M" or Muhammad bestowing on cats the ability to land on thier feet is true. Those are just false myths.

However, there is a lot of mention of cats in some Ahadith etc. The famous Sahabi, Abu Huraira was called this "laqab" or nick name due to his love for cats! I find that very intersting and cute :) . . . Compassion for animals is another trait of a believer.

Abu Huraira actually means "Father of the Cat" due to his love for his pet cats. (Fathet/Mother of... was/is a popular Arabic way of nick-naming ppl) And in some narrations it is mentioned that Abu Hurraira would often be seen with his favourite pet cat, and would sometime have kittens peeping out of pockets :) Brings a smile to my face.

If you plan on keeping a cat . . .I would say by all means go ahead! They make great pets and I have had several strays in the past. Just make sure you have the time/finances to care for one. Does anyone in your family have allergies? Cat saliva/hair can cause respiratory problems to ppl with allergies.

Also, if you have very young kids, make sure the Kitty and the Kids are always supervised, bcz Kids seem to think that tails are for pulling! And cats can react to that.

If you would like any personal experiential advise, feel free to post/pm/email me. . .or just post here :P I could suggest breeds etc. Good Luck!

Tongue Big%20smile That is soooo true! I read a very interesting and similar quip somewhere else:

Dogs say, They feed, me love me, and shelter me. . . .They (owners) must be god. Cats say, They feed me, love me and shelter me . . .I must be god! :D heh heh.

However, I've kept 4 cats in the past. . . 3 of them pretty much ignored me, but one of them, a Tortilla female I called Phantom was very affectionate and loving. She almost behaved like a dog, never hissed. . . and actually came running from afar when I called her! Ppl dont believe that. Cats too have personalities, and some can turn out to be extremley affectionate and loving . . . whilst others will ignore you. :)

I got a kitten shortly after I posted this thread.  I had grown up with cats all my life.  My father's cat even stood guard at the entrance to my room when I was a baby and wouldn't let anyone in he didn't know well (to the utter frustration of my cat hating granma! lol).  Luckily no one in either side of my family has allergies to cats or much of any allergies for that matter (outside of the normal spring season allergies) thank God.

I had several cats as an adult as well.  I just didn't have a cat at the time of posting this thread as my last one had passed away.  She passed away about the time I met my husband and married him.  At this point he had a say in having a cat though he knew my love for cats before he married me.  He has now resigned himself to having cats around.  We hope to have children soon inshallah, but we don't have any now.

Oh, my cat plays fetch too with the toy mice.  She can play for longer than we are willing to throw the mouse and even drops it on me when I am trying to sleep and meows at me begging to play.  Her name is Manfusha (fluffy in arabic, lol).

my cat likes long distance, when he was little short distance was fine but not know, if you throw short distance he won't even bother going after it, lol! but when you throw long distance man he's off like a sprinter down into my room and then plays soccer on the floor boards, lol!

When I had my dog she wouldn't fetch, she would would watch the ball or frisbee but it was the cat that chased it, and with the frisbee Oscar would sit on top like as if its mine its mine LOL

I have heard this too.  My father said he cleaned the litter box when my mother was pregnant.  I suppose I will have to convince my husband it is in our best interest that he clean the litter box if I become pregnant inshallah.  I wonder what he is going to say for that.

About the pregnancies:

If you have a cat, consider not handling the cat litter. It can transmit toxoplasmosis, a parasitic infection that can cause birth defects. Wear gloves while gardening in areas where cats may visit.

Or maybe train your cat to 'go' in the garden. They cover it up themselves . . . and so wont leave any gross 'reminders' :p Then you wont have to bother with litter and cat-poo.

Though I would suggest not worrying too much abt it, as long as u don't directly come into contact i.e. wearing gloves etc.

I don't allow my cat outside because the few times I did she just raced right to the middle of the street.  My last cat was run over and killed that way so I can't bear to have that happen again.  The most I allow is a few minutes for her if I am sitting outside to get some sun.  If my cat even tries to head for the street then I grab her and take her inside.  Call it protective, but the memories are still fresh of the last cat and watching her die :(

I had thought of gloves and wondered what others thought of that.  Thanks for bringing it up :)

Salams wife, I get protective of my cat too, he's often outside and knows his area, he's pretty good but when I'm outside in the front and he's somewhere around and a car comes by i wonder where he is trying to keep an eye out.
Mum once had a cat when she left for the day followed after her and there was a road to cross and accidently got hit.

I ususally don't like leaving and letting the cat out when I go, I perfer putting him out the back and so can't see me but I know he can see from under the house. Lately oscar's been leaving out the front with me when i leave and i keep saying to him, stay out of trouble & stay home :), he does watch me walk down the street thou. It was funny one day when i left he watched me and when i was out of sight oscar went into next door and sat in the grass and continued to watch me.

I understand your aprehensions.

I don't think there is anything wrong with wearing gloves, I would probably wash my hands thoroughly afterwards anyway.
