Hello

My name is Sarah and Im from a Non religious family.  I mean I have been brought up to believe that religion is a waste of time.  But now I have grown older I feel that this cant be right.  But I continued to question this in my head until I met a muslim and as I carried on seeing him I became interested in Islam and Im now studying at home with books he has given me.  My family know about me considering on converting and they dont understand why! And dont like the idea of me covering up. I have had a few arguements with my family about this. But ever since I started reading Islam I have great belief in Allah. Although I have read alot I still feel I need to know more so Im looking forward to hearing from any one who would like to advise/help me!!

Sarah,

I am a woman, I am also a former Christian.  I have been a Muslim for many years.  If you wish to talk, just hit the PM button on my post and you will be able to "e-mail" me through this forum.  If you want to know more about the Private Messenger service, push that button at the top of the page.

Peace, ummziba.

Salam ala kum Sarah,

May Allah (s.w.a.) continue to give you his Hidiyah (guidance), and know that Allah's Mercy and Love surronds you.

I am an Anglo American man who converted to Islam from Protestant Christianity 13 years ago. I am hear to help you with whatever questions you have, and I will try to answer them to the best of my ability.

Although you are fortunate that in this day and age there is alot of information about Islam avilable online, I would strongly encourage you to become an active member of a local mosque/masjid. If you are able to make it on Friday afternoon, this is the best time to go. If you are like me, and work on Fridays then see what they have avilable on the weekends. Islam is a religion that must be practiced in the context of a Muslim community to be truly understood. It took me many years to fully appreciate this fact, and many Muslims who are already part of community take this aspect of the religion for granted.

As you go along, you will find that there are differences of opinion among the Muslim Umma. IGNORE THIS! In the begining, just focus on the basics (i.e, understanding the pillars of Islam, salat (prayer), fasting during Ramadan (or other times if you can), reading Quran, etc. These are things we all agree on and they are a solid foundation.

As far as your family goes, this will be a difficult issue. Honestly, I still have problems in this area (although half of my family is now Muslim, Hamdulilah!) Just try to be honest with them, don't be confrontational (but, of course, don't obey them if they are telling you to disobey Allah (God)). It's not easy. May Allah reward you for your effort.

Salam.
