As-Salaam alaikum, In a Hadith narration by al-Hakim and Tirmidhi with chains from Jabir and Ali, may Allah be pleased with them both, Prophet Muhammad, Sallallahu alaihi Wasallam, said:-- "I am the city of knowledge and Ali is its gate". In this statement is an affirmation of 2 realities:-- (1) That the Prophet, Sallallahu alaihi Wasallam, encompasses all knowledge granted creation from the Lord of Creation. (2) Ali Ibn Abi Talib, may Allah be pleased with him, was chosen as the one through whom access to that knowledge was made possible. Regarding the first reality, we may recall that Allah Ta'ala says in Surat Jinn of the Holy Qur'an:-- "He discloses not His unseen (ghayb) to anyone, except only to such a Messenger as He is well-pleased with." (72:26) Sayyadina Muhammad, alaihi salaat was-salaam, is the Crown of all those Messengers with whom Allah is well-pleased. As the one who ascended above the 7 Heavens and the 7 Paradises to his Lord's Presence by "two bows length or even nearer" (53:9); as the one who told of the events that attended the creation of all existent beings; as the one to whom was revealed the inimitable Qur'an, who is more deserving of such a boundless gift-- the gift of knowledge from the Divine Presence? "And We granted you knowledge of what you knew not, and the bounty of Allah for you has has been infinite". (4:113) |
