Use brain / mind (heart) to understand Al Quran..

(AL ARAAF 179)
And we have certainly created for hell many of the jinn and mankind. They have hearts (mind) with which they do not understand, they have eyes with which they do not see, they have ears with which they do not hear. Those are like livestock, rather they are more astray. It is they who are the heedless..

Use brain to understand AL Quran so it will guide your brain /mind to judge between right and wrong (criterion)

(AL BAQARA 185)
The month of Ramadhan in which was revealed the AL Quran. a guidance for the people and clear proofs of guidance and criterion...

God wrath for those who do not use their brain /mind..

(YUNUS 100)
And it is not for a soul to believe except by permission of ALLAH, and he will place defilement upon those who will not use reason (mind)

Thank you ethelena for this important post, and for the supporting Qur'an verses.

This is a HUGE, controversial subject: it's the 'age old' argument between 'Aql and Naql: which one should be prioritized?. If not handled properly, it can lead to confusion. Philosophers and Ahlul'Kalam (and even Atheists, Communists...etc) love this subject (because it's an opportunity for some of them to have a few 'digs' at Islam). For the beginner/layman: Tread carefully... or at least keep it simple.

Yes. the function of brain/mind/reason is to understand the Qur'an and Sunnah and accept them... not to start judging whether (some aspects of) Qur'an and Sunnah suit/fit our norms of modern society living and reasoning.

Yes. As long as we judge/distinguish between Right and Wrong in light of our Qur'an and Sunnah, and not in accordance with what our logical reasoning says, or what the majority of people decide, or what has become the norm in our modern society... We have to be careful with this!

Yes. We have to use our brain/mind/reason to understand God's Commands and obey them... not to question and interpret according to our own whims/desires, as this may lead us to disobey Allah's Commands.

Following the Qur'an ans Sunnah does not mean that you have to remain stuck in the 7th and 8th centuries ways of living!... on the contrary: you can lead a very modern life but without having to go against the Commands of Allah SWT. It's all in the way of thinking and personality.

On the other hand: We should not be 'afraid' of the rapid changes in our modern society; there are always ways of adapting and being flexible... but still within (strict) adherence to Allah's Commands and Will. These modern changes are a 'test/challenge' for us, and as (steadfast) Muslim, I need to take them on board and cope with them while sticking to the Commands of He Who is Testing and Watching me. Yes at times it's hard, but Allah SWT Tells us: [86:2] "Do men think that they will be left alone on saying, "We believe," and that they will not be tested?"
