My spiritual training has been based in Buddhist teachings. I found much peace and harmony while studying and practicing Buddhism. With that in mind, my spiritual practice became top priority. This may have skewed my balance as my spiritual life overshadowed work and social responsibilities. I was ready to detach myself and become a recluse. But that would have caused pain to my family.
I am also a scientist in trade. Thus, my interest in the history of scientific thought introduced me to Islam. The history of Islamic thought during the Golden Age is quite inspiring. Though my research, I find that Islam strikes a balance between spirituality, work, and family life that I have been looking for. Coming from a spiritual practice that neither acknowledges nor deny the existence of God, some concepts of Islam are a bit foreign to me. Also, some revelations during the Ummah's return to Makkah is difficult to swallow. Please know that I come from a place of sincere inquiry. I am thoroughly inspired by the devotion and kindness of the Muslim brothers and sisters I have come across. Sometimes I feel inappropriate to ask certain questions. I fear that I would come across as arrogant (or worse; as an agent of Satan): "who are you to question the worthiness of our God and Prophet?" But a belief system that withstands all filter and questions is one most certainly one out of this world. As a fellow brother who suffers as you do, who yearns for peace as you do, I hope that some questions I raise in this forum will not be taken as an offense of any kind.
