Translation 71:15-16 by Mohsin Khan:

See you not how Allah has created the seven heavens one above another,
and has made the moon a light therein, and made the sun a lamp?

As far as I understood it is especially the second sentence which is considered as a miracle.

Let's do the test and try to find out the meaning you consider as the most probable (you're free to add other interpretations to my list).

Mohamed/Allah tries to inform us that:

---------------------------------------------------

A) The sun is brighter than the moon (something an illiterate person could not have known 1400y ago).

B) It's allegorical: Sun and moon are big and "powerful" objects. If they were created by god how much more powerful must god be.

C) Lamps were mainly oil lamps at the time. When they fell to the floor the oil could ignite like a bomb. It is thus a clear indication for the thermonuclear processes in the sun i.e. the CNO cycle (Oil consists of carbon and Hydrogen!) and the Protonproton chain reaction.

D) It's all gibberish as much as the nonsense of "7 heavens"

E) The Quran is the finest masterpiece of literature, these sentences have been chosen for the rhyme

F) It was probably a hot day without any clouds when this surah was written. 'Cloudless' means that the nights can get very cold in the desert and the little light the moon sheds doesn't make it any better.

G) I don't know, but since it is the Quran it must have a profound meaning

----------------------------------------------------

Please do not only choose but try to explain why you've selected this/these (or your own added) interpretation(s)

Thanks: Airmano

The word God is for me nothing more than the expression and product of human weaknesses (Albert Einstein 1954, in his "Gods Letter")
