Title: Sharia: Gender Difference and Inheritance DVD
In March this year certain sections of the Australian media actively campaigned against Sharia in the Canberra case of a daughter disputing a Muslim will which would have given her half that of her brothers. "Sharia unwelcome" was the headline selected for the letters to the editor in response to one newspaper's coverage. The Attorney-General's comments were also used to push that Muslims should not be using Sharia to resolve family disputes. This seminar addressed important questions about Sharia and Inheritance. Is Australian Law fairer to women? Are Muslims free to write their wills as they choose? What happens to you wealth if you die without a valid will. Three eminently qualified speakers (Sh Yayha Safi, Imran Khan and Dr Ghena Krayem) presented at the this pivotal seminar which was moderated by Deen Academy's prinicple instructor, Dr Zachariah Matthews. In the west a person's will is discretionary, therefore if a Muslim uses this legal discretion to apply his religious duty, what's the problem? Was there a problem when Leona Helmsley's will gave 12 million dollars to her dog, but nothing to her grandchildren?

In this particular case, the daughter challenged the will on the basis that Shariah based law is not fair and this is what this excellent seminar covers from a Shariah, legal (Australian Law) and social prespectives. |
