O Believers, do not take the Jews nor the Christians as your friends: they are one another's friends only. If anyone of you takes them as friends, surely he shall be counted among them; indeed Allah deprives the wrong-doers of His Guidance

You know Whisper is one of the most liberal brother around here!
The unacceptable atrocities in Gaza by Zionist entity with Christian West funded bombs and airplanes and tanks broke the proverbial camel's back....

I don't think the Jews are even Christians' friends they are no ones, they are friends of MONEY doesn't matter where it comes from! The Christians happen to be in large numbers under their system control ....so the Christians have no choice but to be their friends..this the fact so let's us not get bent out of shape what Whisper posted...IT IS OK NOT TO BELIEVE THIS BUT AT YOUR OWN PERIL..
It used to be conspiracy theories no more the current banking melt down proves beyond any shadow of doubt If you believe then just see the PBS presentation and FIGURE WHO IS SCREWING WHO? SOME FRIENDS
 INSIDE THE MELTDOWN

Auzubillahi Minash Shaitan ir Rajeem,

Bismillah ir Rahman ir Rahim,

Check this if you have not seen it already - true but makes you feel helpless for the Palesteninans:

Would just comment, that nothing in the Quran is " out-dated' so to speak. Its a book that stands the test of time. Would agree that ayaat were revealed on the then current situations, but they apply in all times.
Its is not wise to interpret ayat without knowledge, but in The Book is a clear warning against frienship and trust with the Jews. It is indeed amazing the above quoted ayaat reflect the present day situations.

btw, on a side note - to Sasha ... that was a very beautiful urdu script, could you please share the link? Jazak Allahu khair.

I believe it is important not to generalize or unfairly stereotype an entire group.  Allah tells us; And among the People of the Book there is many a one who, if you entrust him with a treasure, will (faithfully) restore it to you; and there is among them many a one who, if you entrust him with a coin of no big value will not restore it to you unless you keep standing over him. (3:75) Also, and never let hatred of anyone lead you into deviating from justice. Be just: this is the closest to being God-conscious (5:8)

Not taking the Jews and Christians as friends the Arabic word awliya (waliyy); friends is not a correct translation given the historical circumstances at the time this verse was revealed.  Islam was in its early stages and the People of the Book were hostile and at war with the Prophet of Allah, thus the context was not simply friends but not to take them as allies; in the context of war against the Messenger of Allah.

We are all hurt not only by recent events in Palestine, but the ongoing apartheid in the Occupied Territories and enduring suffering of both Muslim and Christian Palestinians; however we must exercise caution and not condemn an entire group or religion.  I think our primary abhorrence should be with Zionist, as the hatred of those from Middle East should not be for Americans, but policies of American government.  Otherwise, as some radical Muslims have alleged, that all Americans are targets, we do not consider all Christians and Jews as enemies.  This is an extreme position.  And Allah Knows Best.

The Qur'an reveals many explanations, however it is not the best way for usto simply pick verses and display them out of their contexts.

The Prophet (peace be upon him) continued to show compassion and kindness to the Jews of those days, despite their utter hatred and repeated insults shown in various forms and acts.

It is this compassion that turned many of those extreme haters to eventually become sincere Muslims. Islam is not about hatred, it is about endurance, perseverance and patience. Of course, it iseasier said than done, but that's the best way, and the way of Muhammad (peace be upon him).

Where are we today?

I second that.
