Posted at Teeth Maestro: On 12th July, AAJ Tv boradcasted a program of Live with Talat in which Talat Hussain visited Jamia Hafsa.  While touring the bullet ridden compound a number of military personal hovered around, at a certain point Talat Hussain asked an accompanying Army personal about all the evidence of smoke around the area asking, "Why is there so much smoke?", the solider replied "WP", Talat put another question "Please explain WP?", the solider answered "White Phosphorus."

White Phosphorus is a flare / smoke producing incendiary weapon which is also used as an offensive Anti-Personnel flame compound capable of causing serious burns or death.  White phosphorus weapons are controversial today because of its potential use against humans, for whom one-tenth of a gram is a deadly dose and according to the Geneva Convention which was later amended by the Convention on Certain Conventional Weapons signed into effect in 1997, expressively prohibits the use against civilians.  White Phosphorus weapons have been used in the recent past by Israel in Lebanon and US and UK in Iraq, but probably the first time ever by a an army against its own people

Article 1 of Protocol III of the Convention on Certain Conventional Weapons (Wikipedia) defines an incendiary weapon as any weapon or munition which is primarily designed to set fire to objects or to cause burn injury to persons through the action of flame, heat, or combination thereof, produced by a chemical reaction of a substance delivered on the target. The same protocol also prohibits the use of incendiary weapons against civilians or in civilian areas.  However, the use against military targets outside civilian areas is not explicitly banned by any treaty.

There continues to be a strong debate on how Musharraf should have handled this situation, but what surprises me is the inhumanity of this attack, dexterity of the assault should have meant targeted exchange of fire maybe an occasional rubber bullet to pacify the milder militants, but the indiscriminate use of chemical weapons, by the National Army against its own people. Is jaw dropping serious, its akin to the mass murder which happened in Karachi on May 12th when the Army headed off to the barracks leaving the city at the hands of ruthless killers for six hours..

Fallujah VictimTo understand the gravity of the situation one has only to look at these two images of burnt bodies the sight is excruciatingly painful, when the Americans used White Phosphorous on the victims in Fallujah back in April 2004.

If you look at the top most image which appeared in Dawn on 13th July (link) one sees the classic signs of a high intensity flame, which reached astounding temperatures to melt the steel framework of ceiling fans, one must also noted that the public was not shown the remains of numerous people killed in the disaster and quickly buried them in concealed wooden coffins the next day.

I am shocked and stunned at what has just happened, it should be enough for the world to wake up and ask for an unconditional removal of the dictator

Farwa Syeda, You have every right to have extreme right wing opinions

Ah, my great Morshed, I love your style!

Sometimes, I wish, I had your whizdom. What an idea! if someone doesnt agree with you, outright, just fling em in the extreme right wing buggers basket.

but thanks to allah people like you are very few and far in between with no support among the common folks who just want to lead normal peaceful lives as good muslims.

I feel, I must cease laughing at my great morshed and pose a few questions for him, though I have known his habit of fleeing at first sight of any proper thought or, better still, retreating to start another battle, in some other string!

Sir, how many common folks have you ever been in close contact with? Specially, in the 8th year of the generals misrule?

Have you ever lived in a village?

Or, operate with hourly contact with the hard working ordinaryfolks of your country?

Just kindly list what you know of the aspirations and the sentiment of these ordinary folks, say, just in Pakistan?

Narrow minded secretarian individuals like you who blindly hate the west

Absolute wrong number.

Had these people been blind to what the west is doing to them, wont they follow your example of just loving the west in absolute blindness?

and everyone ranging from shias, mohajirs etc are causing nothing but disunity, internal strife and misery for the ordinary muslim man on the street.

I sincerely wish I could believe that you as much as know the ordinary muslim man on the street leave aside hold some kind of a mandate, on his behalf, to abuse all who happen to disagree with you???

Dictatorships, all dictatorships, even the dictatorship of some great genius who has invented the Muslims close their eyes and billi (gato, cat) wont see us! Concept, leave behind just strife and the type of the social conditions you are listing in your above sentence.

Its still not late to reflect upon your views and try to change them so that you and your neighbours could live in peace.

This sentence could also read: dont utter a word keep the status quo and just behave yourselves! Dare you say anything against the dictator or our Altaf Bhai!

May Allah guide you and your kind to the right path of peace, success and prosperity.

Could I go partners with you if you have come to hold some sort of a sole franchise on the right path of peace, success and prosperity ?

It is all about $$$$

When I was in Islamabad. I had just returned from a trip to the north. A friend who had been in Afghanistan recommended her friends to help me find a place to stay in Islamabad. So I contacted them. They were gracious to house me for an evening.  The couple had a baby who lived there. He was from US. She was from Japan. They were in Pakistan doing aid work.

I had some long conversations. The guy was development work. And he was in charge of giving millions of dollars away. He told me of a project he was in charge of. It was buying pre-fabricated schools made in Turkey.  Shipping them to Karachi and then sending them up all the way to the Himalayas. Plus they had to bring the Turkish builders to put them back together. Now most of us can imagine the cost and expenditures. And we also can imagine just how many schools they could have built that were made in Pakistan (yes Pakistanis do know how to build schools.) On top of it the village was chosen cause a military general wanted it in that village.

Then this guy proceeded to tell me that he really believed that Pakistanis were stunted. Now imagine this guy is supposed to be one of the good guys.

One reason that he thought they were stunted was because he visited Indonesia and he saw a girl behind a guy on a motorcycle with her legs locked around his waist. See that is true enlightenment

So you see the corruption by high officials plays a direct correlation to the problems of a society.

If Musharref had attempted to build schools in all the villages I could then call him an Enlightened Moslem.

When you do things from your soul, you feel a river moving in you, a joy. Rumi
