Assalaamu alaikum.

I think it is not necessarily the case that we muslims (whether children or adults) listen to the non-muslims in favor of muslim directives. But rather that for all concerned-muslims and non-muslims alike-simply taking advice only on face value is difficult and many times we opt, out of our human nature, to not accept such advice until we have a proven reason to accept such advice.

And the advancements of medical and scientific studies-whether conducted by muslims or non-muslims-helps to only strengthen and verify that which is already existent in the form of perfect advice in Islam, in the Quran and in the sunnah both.

And it is exactly these medical and scientific 'proofs' which have helped to turn many non-muslims towards islam, in fact.

asalamu alaikum, lol yeah, i meant it like that, if the heart is corrupt then the person is corrupt, but subhannaAllah, the heart is an interesting matter. Islam touches base on everything.. It's sad that, people preach Islam for so long to a person, and someone doesnt believe it until they hear it from a non Muslim.
For example, A kid was told by his mom to pray qiyam, and he told his mom he had to rest. Then when he was taking tae kwon do (i think thats how its spelled) his bhuddist instructor told him that you should sleep more than 6 hours at a time, so in the middle of the night, you should wake up and stretch so that you're always alert and swift. The kid went back to his mom and said "sadakti" which means you told the truth. SubhannaAllah, Islam is beautiful.

Bi ismillahir rahmanir raheem

assalamu alaikum

Quote I listened as one of the members of the audience asked the speaker a question, he mentioned that although there is much reference to the heart as 'feeling' center and emotional...yet scientifically it is merely a muscle which pumps the blood. And it is the brain which actually controls thought, and even controls the beating of the heart itself.

This is incorect even scientificaly, the brain sends signals to every part of the body but the heart is the only organ which sends signal to the brain, it has something like 40 millinon (ive forgoten the word) Neurons?? which send signals to the brain, this is only a recent discovery dont know how many years though.

The scholars are agreed though that the heart spoken of in the quran and sunnah is not the physical heart but spiritual heart (This inner self the Qur'an calls the qalb or the 'heart'), and its place just happens to be in the physical heart. so when Rasul allah (sallah llahu alaihi wa sallam) says if it is deseased the rest of the body is he means if you corupt your heart you will entirely be corupted.

Insha allah when i have more time i will post more on this.

Also, there is the common hadith that says that if one part of the body is healthy than the whole body is healthy, and if this one part of the body is diseased then the whole body is diseased. The heart. (total paraphrasing).. but yeah, so subhannaAllah, the heart controls almost everything in our body. Because even the involuntary pumping of the heart, it over powers the brain by far, because of the heart the brain is supplied with blood, and if it was cut off, then the mind would be useless. all one can say is subhannaAllah..

Assalaamu alaikum.

Intersting and inspiring message. Thanku for sharing it with us as reminder.

I listened to a recent lecture by a local scholar here in saudi...and this scholar is also a medical doctor...a heart specialist.

He has made several speaches on this very topic, expanding more and more angles towards better understanding of the whole thing.

I listened as one of the members of the audience asked the speaker a question, he mentioned that although there is much reference to the heart as 'feeling' center and emotional...yet scientifically it is merely a muscle which pumps the blood. And it is the brain which actually controls thought, and even controls the beating of the heart itself.

So...with this understanding, scientifically, is it not wrong to assume that our feelings and emotions and even spiritual beings do not actually rest within the heart??

And the scholar's answer was...to begin with, as we are told in the Quran...that our knowledge (even when we ourselves think it to be vast and deep)...is only limited. And then he went on to explain further.

He said that there are many references in the Quran itself, as well as in the sunnah, that the heart is the center of the feelings and emotions and spiritual being. Not the brain. The brain is for thinking, and the heart is for feeling and carrying out those feelings.

And so we should take it on the word of Allah that this is true, as it is mentioned in Quran, as well as mentioned by the prophet(SAAW).

Secondly, he related his own personal experiences as a heart specialist who has witnessed many heart transplants.

He has mentioned that those who have received a heart transplant, their feelings and emotions seem to change. It may not be so noticable to the lay person, but to him it was more obvious.

He mentioned that those patients who he had witnessed after their heart transplant...if they were given a present, for instance (i.e. something to react happily towards)...their reaction was dull and not happy (not necessarily sad, either-but definitely not happy).

And when they were presented with a snake (i.e. something to induce a frightened reaction), they reacted with non-surprise and no fear whatsoever. It could have been simply a glass of water that they were presented with, as well as it was a snake.

This is a simple non-clinical test helping to prove the declaration that the feelings lie within the heart, and not the brain.

The brain may send electric waves of orders...but it is the heart that commands them.

Perhaps similar to this computer and internet connections.

Our fingers do the typing, and we hit the enter key to send it all...but without the cv command center of the computer letting it go thru, then the rest is simply mechanical and worthless (for without the command to go thru, it will not obviously go out nor will the message reach it's destination.)

Perhaps a poor analogy. Sorry. First thing I could think of.

balqees.

subhannaAllah, the heart of a human is a strange matter.. it is hard to change what it feels, but the mind can waiver so easily. Thats probably why the heart is where iman taqwa and ikhlas is and not in the mind.
Jazakum Allahu khairan that was interesting..

Bi ismillahir rahmanir raheem

assalamu alaikum

What is the Heart?

The more important part of your 'person' is your inner self. This inner self the Qur'an calls the qalb or the 'heart'. The heart of the Prophet, blessings and peace be on him, was the first recipient of the Qur'anic message:

Truly it has been sent down by the Lord of all the worlds, the Trustworthy Spirit has alighted with it upon your heart [O Prophet], that you may be one of the warners ... (al-Shu'ara' 26: 1924).

You will therefore reap the full joys and blessings of reading the Qur'an when you are able to involve your heart fully in your task.

The 'heart', in Qur'anic vocabulary, is not the piece of flesh in your body, but the centre of all your feelings, emotions, motives, drives, aspirations, remembrance and attention. It is the hearts which soften (al-Zumar 39: 23), or harden and become stony (al-Baqarah 2: 74). It is they which go blind and refuse to recognize the truth (al-Hajj 22: 46) for it is their function to reason and understand (al-A'raf 7: 179;al-Hajj 22: 46; Qaf 50: 37). In hearts, lie the roots of all outward diseases (al-Ma'idah 5: 52); they are the seat of all inner ills (al-Baqarah 2: 10); hearts are the abode of Iman (al-Ma'idah 5: 41) and hypocrisy (al-Tawbah 9: 77). It is the hearts, again, which are the centre of every good and bad thing, whether it be contentment and peace (al-Ra'd 13: 28), the strength to face afflictions (al-Taghabun 64: 11), mercy (al-Hadid 57: 27), brotherly love (al-Anfal 8: 63), taqwd (al-Hujurat 49: 3; al-Hajj 22: 32); or, doubt and hesitation (al-Tawbah 9: 45), regrets (Al 'Imran 3: 156), and anger (al-Tawbah 9: 15). Finally it is, in reality, the ways of the heart for which we shall be accountable, and only the one who brings before his God a sound and whole heart will deserve to be saved.

God will not take you to task for a slip, but He will take you to task for what your hearts have earned (al-Baqarah 2: 225).

The Day when neither wealth nor children shall profit, [and when] only he [will be saved] who comes before God with a sound heart [free of evil] (al-Shu'ara' 26: 88-9).

You must therefore ensure that so long as you are with the Qur'an, your heart remains with you. The heart not being that piece of flesh but what the Qur'an calls qalb.

Way to The Quran by Khurram Murad.
