Dear Hannon,
The title caught my eye, but the length of your post blinded me. I cross my heart and promise to read your posts - if and when they are tweny five lines or less in length. You really really need a sympathetic editor..... |

ejdavid, perhaps you haven't noticed, Hanan is not the author of
most of her posts. Many people take articles from places on the web and put them here, as they feel they are of vital importance or relevance to the Muslim world today. They are generally lifted from sites which don't belong in the mainstream media, and generally people paste the original source. If you have difficulty concentrating on anything longer than 25 lines, perhaps you have spent too long in the grip of the mass media. Maybe you need to take a commercial break now? We'll be back, after this break .... |

Duende - Hannon
Duende. You point is well taken. As a result I read one of Hannons posts in more detail, and provide a small rejoiner below. Hannon - You wrote: "In what way are the spiritual values of the United States, today's Empire of the West, superior to those of India and China." First, India. The caste system is an abomination upon the entire country. In fact, the lowest class, dahlits [untouchables] are, religiously speaking, not even included among human beings; they were created from a different matterial. To this day, in parts of India, a dahlit is in danger of his life even if his shadow falls upon a high caste person. There are other issues as well. For instance the charming custom of 'suttee'. It is nearly extinct now, but even in recent times many wives were burned on the funeral pyres of their dead husbands as a form of respect. And there is the simple fact the Great Indian Civilization is to this day known for the life threatening poverty of a huge number of its citizens. All these things in India are now improving. However, they are improving due to the economic progress made since many socialist restrictions have been removed. This is a Western Import, as are the expanded civil rights being struggled for by the lower castes. |

Hannon,
China has a better history then India in some ways. Specifically, the Confusion system of social organization is more cohesive and just IMHO. However, the Imperial system of government did not place much value on the lower classes, and they suffered greatly as a result. Despite China's impresive intellectual history and other well know achievements, only in VERY recent times has the nation produced enough excess wealth to lift even a fraction of its people out of life-threatening poverty. Like India, this has been the result of western style industrialization. In summary, Materialist Westernization has lifted huge numbers of people out of abject poverty in both China and India. I believe creating life sustaining wealth for billions of people IS a spiritual value of the very highest order. |
