   As-Salaam alikum,
 Divine Punishment of the Muslim Ummah was/is made to be inflicted by its own hands in this world. As we heard it in the Hadith:-

 "Allah has made their punishment take place among themselves."
           (Narrated from Abu Musa by Ahmad, Musnad 32:427 No.19,658 and others).

Another wording states that the greater harm of the Ummah will not originate from an external enemy but from among themselves:

    "Allah has folded up the earth for me and I saw its east and its
     west, and I have asked my Lord on behalf of my Ummah that He
    should not cause it to perish through a general famine nor let
    prevail over them any enemy from other than themselves 
    plundering their midst.
   My Lord said: 'O Muhammad! Verily, once I have decreed 
   something, it can never be turned back. Verily, I have given you,
  for the benefit of your community, that I will not cause them to
 perish through a general famine, and I will not let prevail over them
 any enemy from other than themselves plundering their midst; 
 even as those inside their own regions gather up against them until
 they destroy one another and enslave one another."
                  (Narrated from Thawban by Muslim).

Another wording of such ahadith adds that such strifes will fester until the end of times:-

  "Once the sword is used amidst my community it shall never be
   lifted from it until the Day of Resurrection."
        (Narrated from Thawban, by Tirmidhi, Babil Fitna, and Ahmad,
          Musnad 37:78 No. 22395).

Chief characteristic of internecine strifes is identified as takfir or anathema, the wrongful leveling of the verdict of apostasy by Muslims against other Muslims. In such a scenario, the tongue is just as harmful as the sword, and harm is feared from every brother and every neighbor.
