Are some people simply unintelligent?

I was shocked to hear that many Muslims wanted a non-Muslim man in Afganistan executed simply for having a different beleif. My question is this. If Muslims kill non-beleivers, are they not taking away the choice of those non-beleivers to eventually become Muslims? Why is there no outrage amongst the Muslim community denouncing the persecution and killing of non-believers who could someday become Muslims? Or do Muslims simply not think about the Islamic doctrines and accept what others tell them blindly?
