As-Salaam alaikum,

The Noble Messenger of Allah, Sallallahu alaihi Wasallam, advised Sayyadi Ali Ibn Abi Talib, may Allah be pleased with him: 'Ali, wretchedness has 4 qualities: an inflexible being, hard heart, far-reaching hope and love of this world!

Ali, I forbid you 4 terrible qualities: envy, avarice, lying and anger.'
Recorded by Sayyadi Ibn Arabi in his
  'Futuhat Makkiyya'.
...Needless to add that it will do a lot of good to embrace this Prophetic advise, in living our life in this worldly life.

I am going to steal Dr. Brown's quip about having to "dunk one's head in a 7th century bucket". He confirms my belief that the proper methods of reading hadith and bible are related. His hermeneutics are very similar to Christian ones.

Primarily solid, critical and analytical thinking. Reading ancient literature, especially inspired literature, is not like reading a common book yet plenty of people assume they can just pick up a bible or collection of hadith and casually read it like a common, modern book.
