	Windmills have four problems. They require maintainance, they are inefficient (Betz' law; 59% max. efficiency), they are expensive and good locations are limited. The reason they are being pushed is that they are not DIY friendly and the power from them can be metered and sold. They are big business size investments. Solar panels are now down to $1.40/watt. Cheaper per watt and you can buy them and put them on your own roof. No moving parts. You just keep them clean.
