There's no short answer for this. Islam was first introduced through trade. The kings of the trading kingdoms around Malacca Straits found that being Muslim helped them attracting traders from the Ottoman empire and kingdoms of Malabar coast. Thus the raise of Samudera Pasai and the conversion of Malaka to Islam. This was around 13th-14th century.
Malaka was then rising to become the most influential kingdom of Malacca Straits and Sumatra. The result, for other Sumatran kingdoms, becoming Muslim helped them securing a powerful political and economic patron. Hence conversion of most Sumatra royalties to Islam.
The spread of Islam in Java, I suspect followed the same pattern. Economic and political necessity, followed by mass conversion. In Java this probably related to the rise of Malacca and the decline of Majapahit. For the coastal kingdoms like Demak and Banten it was more beneficial to align with Malacca rather than Majapahit. This was on 14th-15th century.
