Secret services say Iran is trying to assemble a nuclear missile
Document seen by Guardian details web of front companies and middlemen
Ian Cobain and Ian Traynor
Wednesday January 4, 2006
The Guardian

The Iranian government has been successfully scouring Europe for the sophisticated equipment needed to develop a nuclear bomb, according to the latest western intelligence assessment of the country's weapons programmes.

Scientists in Tehran are also shopping for parts for a ballistic missile capable of reaching Europe, with "import requests and acquisitions ... registered almost daily", the report seen by the Guardian concludes.

The warning came as Iran raised the stakes in its dispute with the United States and the European Union yesterday by notifying the International Atomic Energy Authority that it intended to resume nuclear fuel research next week. Tehran has refused to rule out a return to attempts at uranium enrichment, the key to the development of a nuclear weapon.

The 55-page intelligence assessment, dated July 1 2005, draws upon material gathered by British, French, German and Belgian agencies, and has been used to brief European government ministers and to warn leading industrialists of the need for vigilance when exporting equipment or expertise to so-called rogue states.

It concludes that Syria and Pakistan have also been buying technology and chemicals needed to develop rocket programmes and to enrich uranium. It outlines the role played by Russia in the escalating Middle East arms build-up, and examines the part that dozens of Chinese front companies have played in North Korea's nuclear weapons programme.

But it is the detailed assessment of Iran's nuclear purchasing programme that will most most alarm western leaders, who have long refused to believe Tehran's insistence that it is not interested in developing nuclear weapons and is trying only to develop nuclear power for electricity. Governments in the west and elsewhere have also been dismayed by recent pronouncements from the Iranian president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who has said that Holocaust denial is a "scientific debate" and that Israel should be "wiped off the map".

The leak of the intelligence report may signal a growing frustration at Iran's refusal to bow to western demands that it abandon its programme to produce fuel for a Russian-built nuclear reactor due to come on stream this year.

The assessment declares that Iran has developed an extensive web of front companies, official bodies, academic institutes and middlemen dedicated to obtaining - in western Europe and in the former Soviet Union - the expertise, training, and equipment for nuclear programmes, missile development, and biological and chemical weapons arsenals.

"In addition to sensitive goods, Iran continues intensively to seek the technology and know-how for military applications of all kinds," it says.

The document lists scores of Iranian companies and institutions involved in the arms race. It also details Tehran's growing determination to perfect a ballistic missile capable of delivering warheads far beyond its borders.

It notes that Iran harbours ambitions of developing a space programme, but is currently concentrating on upgrading and extending the range of its Shahab-3 missile, which has a range of 750 miles - capable of reaching Israel.

Iranian scientists are said to be building wind tunnels to assist in missile design, developing navigation technology, and acquiring metering and calibration technology, motion simulators and x-ray machines designed to examine rocket parts. The next generation of the Shahab ("shooting star" in Persian) should be capable of reaching Austria and Italy.

No one is going to start a nuclear war....they'd have to be crazy given the number of active missiles in the variety of countries.

No Muslim country would be stupid enough to attack the US with Nuclear weapons....when the retaliation would wipe out their entire nation.  MAD

Mutually Assured Destruction.

Anyone who uses a Nuke in war is killing the world.  There is a reason its only been done once (okay, technically twice, but same war, same targets)

If Iran needs a nuclear Nupper (baby's pacifier for those who don't know what a nupper is) to make itself feel safe, then so be it....

Iran intelligence is not trustworthy
Friday January 6, 2006
The Guardian

Your front-page coverage of Iran's alleged nuclear activities (Report, January 4) suggests that you have not learned the important lessons from Iraq. After recent intelligence failures over WMD, editors should be doubly wary of "leaked intelligence", its timing and the motives of those who provided the information.

Your coverage of a secret services report about Iran's nuclear ambitions contains little new. It is mainly rehashed information available from public sources. It is well known that the Iranians are trying to develop long-range missiles that are potentially capable of carrying nuclear warheads. What the article fails to point out is that they are a long way from achieving this. Dual-use companies are also nothing new. If there was one useful purpose the article could have served, it would have been to name the companies listed in the report.

< = =text/>

There are many reasons to be concerned about Iran's nuclear programme, but the UK and EU must also be held to account for the failure of their diplomatic efforts to curb Iran's nuclear development. Your publication of this material helps those who seek to demonise Iran, makes peaceful resolution of the dispute even more difficult, and means that proper scrutiny of the failure of EU and US policy has once again been avoided.

My friend, we have already been there, done that, got a Billion and a half t-shirts. World domination is a motherless mens' aspiration. It's the dream of men who fail to balance that it's okay for Israel to have a few nukes, but no Muslim country should ever have one.

Why?

No Muslim country would be stupid enough to attack the US with Nuclear weapons....when the retaliation would wipe out their entire nation.  MAD

It has nothing to do with attacking America. Promise, I thought you knew that "attacking the US" is a mere figment of our Washington Vultures' (Hawk is a misnomer. Hawk is an extremely dignified bird) imagination. A mere recipe for whipping up Patriotism, hysteria and other such ailments.

The Muslims are just keen to keep the big bad wolf and its side-kick away. And, time has shown that the US has never attacked a country with even a slight semblance of strength. US have only ever bombed the bombed out. They have invaded the starved with crippling sanctions. Attacked the poor Cubanos with some one of the most exposed pretext. Or they have landed amongst the meagre Philipinos to Christianise them as gaad told one previous divine Presidento of the Promised Land before he went to bed.

My friend, just be honest and tell me what the Muslims should attack you for?

If you really tried to find out in earnest who had attacked you a while earlier you will hold a different view.

Feliz nueve anio!

I was in the case I was making using the US as an example.  I could have easily said India or Israel.  Both nuclear powers, or France, Russia or England.

Iran doesn't "need" nuclear weapons.  Having a nuclear bomb is just having a security blanket.  Wave it around, think your important because you have one.  Threaten to use it, but realize very quickly that you can't.

Having the bomb won't change Iran's status.  They will still be viewed with the same eyes, if only people will worry a little more.

If Iran gets a bomb, I personally am not worried.  Its not like they can use it without reprisal.

The only ones I'm worried about getting ahold of nuclear weapons are terrorist cells (do not immediately assume I mean al-Qaida).  But small separatist movements, guerillas and rebels who think that The Bomb will help them win their war, who have no government to answer to and no courts to sanction them.

I'm not going to worry if Iran is a nuclear power.  Their president/prime minister/current mouth piece, just keeps inserting his foot into his mouth with each passing week.  Meanwhile, the people on the street in Iran don't necessarily feel the exact same way.

If Iran wants power, then they should focus on things the world needs.  Pharmacuticals, Electronics (computers) and scientific research.

To quote my favorite little green sage.  War does not make one Great.
