Just an interesting question which me and my husband wonder about - how did Muslims in the olden days, before alarm clocks were invented, get up in time to pray Fajr and eat Suhoor before fasting? How did the Muslims in the Prophet's (SAW) days get up on time to fast? I know they must eat until the white and black thread become distinguishable, but how did they get up in time to eat before it became distinguishable? Did they have nightwatchmen or something? Who woke them up? Any information on this will be welcomed!

Salam/Peace,

In the olden day nature is your closck and alarm.
Even when I was little we live in in rural area, my mom and dad very much use nature to know fjr, amghrib etc. Let say she lway wake up for sahur on the first time the rooster sing, it's about 3 Am in the morning. Then do fajr time when the red's show up in the east.

Perform pray dhuhr, when the sun a lilttle bit decline, iftar ehn sun set and so on.

In the olden day there is no light polution (at night is realy dark), no noise polution (no voice at night exept animal sing etc) so nature sign is quite accurate.
Salam/Peace,

Semar
