Stop Nestle from patenting the Nigella Sativa plant by signing this petition:

http://action.sumofus.org/a/nestle-nigella-sativa/15/2/?sub=fb

Apparently this is not the first time Nestle tried to patent a plant. As l understand it you cannot patent the natural world and the big pharma companies would not be so negative and bad mouthing natural remedies if the could themselves patent plants for remedies and medicine.

in b/w, how is everyone?

Is Nestl trying to patent the fennel flower, also known as Nigella sativa or black cumin?

Nestl is not trying to patent the fennel flower.
We made patent applications for a compound that can be extracted from Nigella sativa (also known as fennel flower, black seed and black cumin) or from other plants, to help treat or prevent food allergies.
The patent, which has not yet been approved, would not prevent the use of the fennel flower plant for any other purposes, including in traditional and natural remedies.

Side Bar:

Hadith on Black Seed

(1) Narrated Khalid bin Sad: We went out and Ghalib bin Abjar was accompanying us. He fell ill on the way and when we arrived at Medina he was still sick. Ibn Abi 'Atiq came to visit him and said to us, "Treat him with black cumin. Take five or seven seeds and crush them (mix the powder with oil) and drop the resulting mixture into both nostrils, for 'Aisha has narrated to me that she heard the Prophet saying, 'This black cumin is healing for all diseases except As-Sam.' Aisha said, 'What is As-Sam?' He said, 'Death." (Book #71, Hadith #591)

Angel until your post I had never heard of this company. I just don't like signing petitions without at least hearing from Nestle, so I have given their response. Here in Los Angeles people often stand outside of stores and ask patrons to sign petitions, and it seems in all fairness they should at least provide people with information from both sides and maybe have them mail in their signature if convinced. I wonder how many people just sign simply because someone requested them to sign.
