Breastfeeding: A Natural Choice

One of the most important responsibilities a Muslim woman has towards her children is to nourish their minds, bodies and souls with her milk for a period of two years. Her reward for this is so great that if she dies during this period she dies with the status of a martyr. In an age when we see many women choosing to feed their babies powdered milk formula in plastic bottles as a sign of "modernity," we should make an effort to educate ourselves about the unique benefits of breastfeeding so that we do not deprive ourselves and our children of this extraordinary opportunity to gain the pleasure of Allah, Most Glorious.

First of all, every woman's milk is uniquely suited to meet the needs of her own baby. For example, the milk will be richer in the event of a premature birth, helping the baby to make up for his small size. The composition of the milk also changes from feeding to feeding and as the baby grows in order to meet the baby's nutritional needs at each stage of his development. In addition, breastmilk contains at least 100 ingredients and nutrients not found in formula, and these are essential in providing immunities to disease, protection against allergies and prevention against ear infections, digestive disorders and various other ailments common among bottle-fed children. Cow's milk, on the other hand, contains high concentrations of proteins and hormones which are necessary for baby cows to grow normally but which are too rough for a human baby's delicate system.

If this is not enough motivation, breastfeeding is also good for mothers. In the days immediately following birth, the baby's suckling helps the mother's uterus to contract to its normal size. Many women do not get pregnant while breastfeeding (although a small percentage do), so this serves as a natural method of birth control and way of spacing apart children. Breastfeeding women typically regain their pre-pregnancy figures more quickly than other women and are much less prone to breast cancer later in life. Breastfeeding saves money (you never need to buy special equipment), and so long as the baby is feeding regularly and enthusiastically and growing at the rate appropriate for his age, you never need to worry about how much you are feeding him because he will determine the right amount of milk to drink on his own.

Some women express their breastmilk and store it in the refrigerator so that other caretakers can be assigned to feed their babies with the aid of bottles. While these babies get some of the nutritional goodness of their mothers' milk, they miss out on all the emotional and psychological comforts of breastfeeding which are just as important as the physical benefits. The act of breastfeeding creates a special bond between mother and child as it requires the mother to embrace her child several times each day. The babies, in turn, find comfort in their mothers' arms and learn to trust that they have a safe place to go for love and sustenance. In the period of two years, something special has undoubtedly taken place between mother and child.

It is rare these days to find women who breastfeed their children for two whole years as recommended in Islam. Attitudes have changed, and many women have been convinced that powdered formula (a manufactured drink!) is better than their own milk! May all women reflect upon Allah's greatness and have confidence in their ability to produce milk in order to nourish their children in the best possible manner. Do not ever forget that formula is a 20th-century invention and that babies since the beginning of time have thrived without it. What's more, the main motivation of the formula industry is to make money while the supposed "convenience" of bottle-feeding has pushed women into the workplace and away from their responsibilities as mothers.

No its not a silly question.

Taryn, while breastfeeding is benefical to both mother and baby and it does build the baby's immune system, no you don't have to. And don't let other people make you feel guilty because you choose not to breastfeed. The choice is your to make.

I once did an argumentive essay on breastfeeding vs bottle feeding, my outcome both have advantages, yes breastfeeding is considered the best because you cannot beat mother nature and its cheaper

For me personally, if you can breastfeed, do it because its better than formula.

Is there a reason why you don't want to breastfeed? (you don't have to share if you feel uncomfortable).

If you are scared, there is help, hope there is in Canada, here in Australia there is much help and its very much encouraged if you can.

Nowdays feeding doesn't have to be left up to you, you can store the breast milk in the freeze, there is these special bags and if you pump the milk straight into the bottle, your husband or anyone can help with feeding time and give you a rest

Not to persuade you but there is so much advantages to breastfeeding if there is no problems. Not all new mothers get it right the first time nor do the babies thenselves, there is a nack to it and both you and baby will eventually find the right position and there is help from nurses.

As I said elsewhere, breastfeeding is not always possible and/or your milk suppy is low or runs out earlier, so then you will have to use formula or cows milk if the baby is old enough to handle it.

So those who say it's not good if you don't breastfeed really need to re-educated themselves.

One last point, are muslims suppose to do it, is anyone suppose to do it? There is no suppose, obligations or nessecities in breastfeeding! What is, is that it is very much highly recommended because breast milk is natural and the best with antibodies to build the immune system that over formula. But in the end it is your choice!! and don't let anyone make you feel guilty if you choose not to for whatever reasons nor are you a failure as a mother either!!

Assalamu alaikum,

Information and help with breast-feeding in Canada can be obtained through your local Health Unit.  You might also find a LaLeche League in your city; these are experienced moms who are extremely helpful in this area (one will even come to your house, if you wish).

In the Qur'an, verse 2:233 addresses this issue - to paraphrase: women are recommended to give suck to their child for two full years.  If the parents, with due consultation, agree to wean the child earlier, there is no blame on them.

From experience, breast-feeding is the most wonderful experience you will ever have with your child!  I highly recommend it!  Feeding with bottles is not even close!

Peace, ummziba.

Taryn,

Maybe it would be better to go to a Lactation specialist at the hospital in your area. I have had several friends that breastfed and made the "MISTAKE" (their words) of calling La Leche League. I think La Leche league is a little rougher to you about breast feeding. I am not sure because I did not call them with my first son. I was told they were like a "small band of Natzi women obsessed with breastfeeding and could be abusive about it."

This was nurses telling me about this so I listened. I cannot say much better about the Lactation Specialist at my hospital but I have heard of other women talking about theirs at their hospital and they loved them. Contact one of them for info.

Also, breast milk has about 100 different things in it that formula cannot mimic. It is better for your baby's digestive system and immune system. Good luck with whatever you decide.

And remember, the most important thing is that your baby is fed, by the bottle or breast.

Assalamu alaikum,

It is very unfortunate that your friends had bad experiences with LaLeche League, Lameese, that was not my experience!  I guess it depends on who belongs to the "club" locally (as with just about anything else!).  Where I live, I've heard nothing but glowing reports on their help to nursing moms, and the ladies I personally knew, were wonderful.

Peace, ummziba.

Thank you all for answering. I am nervous to breast feed because I know a few people that said it was so painful and that they would never do it again. It was more then one so it really mad me nervous to even think about it. Your points do make sense that it is better for the baby.

W's

I am happy for you that you did have a good experience with La Leche League. I have never, and I mean not one time, have heard anything good about them. It could be just the group that is in my area. I have heard nightmare stories about the one here.

But all in all I do agree it is the best way to go. If you can get through the first 5 minutes of it, it is not so bad.
