2:219. �They ask you (O Muhammad) concerning alcoholic drink and gambling. Say: �In them is a great sin, and (some) benefits for men, but the sin of them is greater than their benefit��

5:90. O you who believe! Intoxicants (all kinds of alcoholic drinks), gambling, Al­Ansab, and Al­Azlam (arrows for seeking luck or decision) are an abomination of Shaitan's (Satan) handiwork. So avoid (strictly all) that (abomination) in order that you may be successful.

It is not correct that you are a disbeliever because you drink alcohol. However, according to the following hadith, when a drinker of alcoholic liquor drinks it, then he is not a believer at the time of drinking it.

Ahadith on Acoholic Drinks and Drinkers

Bukhary,Volume 3, Book 43, Number 655:

Narrated Abu Huraira:

The Prophet said, "When an adulterer commits illegal sexual intercourse, then he is not a believer at the time he is doing it, and when a drinker of an alcoholic liquor drinks it, then he is not a believer at the time of drinking it, and when a thief steals, then he is not a believer at the time of stealing, and when a robber robs, and the people look at him, then he is not a believer at the time of doing robbery.

In regard to the drinkers, here is another hadith which was narrated by Ibn Maajah (3377) from �Abd-Allaah ibn �Amr who said:

The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: �Whoever drinks alcohol and gets drunk, his prayer will not be accepted for forty days and if he dies he will go to Hell. But if he repents, Allaah will accept his repentance. If he again drinks alcohol and gets drunk, his prayer will not be accepted for forty days and if he dies he will go to Hell. But if he repents, Allaah will accept his repentance. If he again drinks alcohol and gets drunk, his prayer will not be accepted for forty days and if he dies he will go to Hell. But if he repents, Allaah will accept his repentance. If he commits (this sin) again, then Allaah pledges to make him drink the mud of khabaal on the Day of Resurrection.� They asked, �O Messenger of Allaah, what is the mud of khabaal?� He said, �The juices of the people of Hell.�

Volume 8, Book 81, Number 771:

Narrated 'Umar bin Al-Khattab:

During the lifetime of the Prophet there was a man called 'Abdullah whose nickname was Donkey, and he used to make Allah's Apostle laugh. The Prophet lashed him because of drinking (alcohol). And one-day he was brought to the Prophet on the same charge and was lashed. On that, a man among the people said, "O Allah, curse him! How frequently he has been brought (to the Prophet on such a charge)!" The Prophet said, "Do not curse him, for by Allah, I know for he loves Allah and His Apostle."

Volume 8, Book 81, Number 772:

Narrated Abu Huraira:

A drunk was brought to the Prophet and he ordered him to be beaten (lashed). Some of us beat him with our hands, and some with their shoes, and some with their garments (twisted in the form of a lash). When that drunk had left, a man said, "What is wrong with him? May Allah disgrace him!" Allah's Apostle said, "Do not help Satan against your (Muslim) brother."

The life of this world is only the enjoyment of deception and nothing but amusement & play

Yes the life of this world is only the enjoyment of deception and nothing but amusement & play. We are constantly being deceived by our worldly life and by the chief deceiver (Satan) who deceives us about Allah. We do not realize that whatever enjoyment we are enjoying in transgression against Allah�s Commands is only for a while and it will plunge us into destruction! We do not realize that this enjoyment for a while is nothing comparing to the severe torment in the Hereafter which we might suffer unless Allah forgives us. So, brother take note of the following noble Verses and let not your present to life deceive you, and let not the chief deceiver (Satan) deceive you about Allah. Allah says in the Holy Quran (interpretation of the meaning):

3:185. Everyone shall taste death. And only on the Day of Resurrection shall you be paid your wages in full. And whoever is removed away from the Fire and admitted to Paradise, he indeed is successful. The life of this world is only the enjoyment of deception (a deceiving thing).

57:20. Know that the life of this world is only play and amusement, pomp and mutual boasting among you, and rivalry in respect of wealth and children, as the likeness of vegetation after rain, thereof the growth is pleasing to the tiller; afterwards it dries up and you see it turning yellow; then it becomes straw. But in the Hereafter (there is) a severe torment (for the disbelievers, evil-doers), and (there is) Forgiveness from Allah and (His) Good Pleasure (for the believers, good-doers), whereas the life of this world is only a deceiving enjoyment.

10:23��O mankind! Your rebellion (disobedience to Allah) is only against your ownselves, - a brief enjoyment of this worldly life, then (in the end) unto Us is your return, and We shall inform you that which you used to do.

35:5. O mankind! Verily, the Promise of Allah is true. So let not this present life deceive you, and let not the chief deceiver (Satan) deceive you about Allah.

Do not despair of Allah�s Mercy. Allah is Oft­Forgiving, Most Merciful. Repent and then remain steadfast  

Dear brother in Islam, please note that none of us is perfect and all of us have committed or are committing sins knowingly or in ignorance, in secret or openly. Allah with His infinite Wisdom knows that we will transgress His Commands and will wrong ourselves by committing evil deeds and sins. Therefore, out of His Mercy for us He gave us criterions as to how we can get back to Him after committing such evil and sins against ourselves. He tells us that He is Oft­Forgiving, Most Merciful and asks us not to despair His Mercy! He tells us that if we sincerely repent then He will forgive our sins and grant us Paradise if we remain constant in worshiping Him Alone after repentance. Therefore despair not His Mercy and sincerely repent! Allah says in the Holy Quran (interpretation of the meaning):     

4:110. And whoever does evil or wrongs himself but afterwards seeks All�h's Forgiveness, he will find All�h Oft­Forgiving, Most Merciful.

15:56. [Ibrahim (Abraham)] said: "And who despairs of the Mercy of his Lord except those who are astray?"

39:53. Say: "O 'Ibadi (My slaves) who have transgressed against themselves (by committing evil deeds and sins)! Despair not of the Mercy of Allah, verily Allah forgives all sins. Truly, He is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.

20:82. And verily, I am indeed Forgiving to him who repents, believes (in My Oneness, and associates none in worship with Me) and does righteous good deeds, and then remains constant in doing them, (till his death).

40:55. So be patient (O Muhammad SAW). Verily, the Promise of Allah is true, and ask forgiveness for your fault, and glorify the praises of your Lord in the Ashi (i.e. the time period after the midnoon till sunset) and in the Ibkar (i.e. the time period from early morning or sunrise till before midnoon) [it is said that, that means the five compulsory congregational Salat (prayers) or the 'Asr and Fajr prayers].

3:135-136. And those who, when they have committed Fahishah (illegal sexual intercourse etc.) or wronged themselves with evil, remember All�h and ask forgiveness for their sins; - and none can forgive sins but All�h - And do not persist in what (wrong) they have done, while they know. For such, the reward is Forgiveness from their Lord, and Gardens with rivers flowing underneath (Paradise), wherein they shall abide forever. How excellent is this reward for the doers (who do righteous deeds according to All�h's Orders).

How to Refrain from Sinful Acts

�If Allah helps you, none can overcome you; if He forsakes you, who is - after that - that can help you�. Therefore, strive hard and ask Allah in patience and As-Salat (the prayer) to help you to overcome your problem. Allah says in the Holy Quran (interpretation of the meaning):

2:45. And seek help in patience and As-Salat (the prayer) and truly it is extremely heavy and hard except for Al-Khashi'un [i.e. the true believers in Allah - those who obey Allah with full submission, fear much from His Punishment, and believe in His Promise (Paradise, etc.) and in His Warnings (Hell, etc.)].

2:153. O you who believe! Seek help in patience and As-Salat (the prayer). Truly! Allah is with As-Sabirin (the patient ones, etc.).

29:69. As for those who strive hard in Us (Our Cause), We will surely guide them to Our Paths (i.e. All�h's Religion - Isl�mic Monotheism). And verily, All�h is with the Muhsin�n (good doers).

Allah loves those who put their trust in Him!

Insha Allah, it will not be difficult for you to refrain yourself from the sinful acts if you put your trust in Allah. First make a decision that you will never go back to drink alcohol again and then put your trust in Allah i.e. say to yourself that Allah will help you to overcome the sinful habit. And Allah is Sufficient as a Wakil (Trustee, or Disposer of affairs). Allah says in the Holy Quran (interpretation of the meaning):

33:3. And put your trust in Allah, and Sufficient is Allah as a Wakil (Trustee, or Disposer of affairs).

3:159-160. When you have taken a decision, put your trust in Allah.  For Allah loves those who put their trust in Him.  If Allah help you, none can overcome you; if He forsakes you, who is - after that - that can help you?  In Allah, then, let believers put their trust"

65:3�.. And whosoever puts his trust in All�h, then He will suffice him. Verily, All�h will accomplish his purpose. Indeed All�h has set a measure for all things.

Please also remember that if you fear Allah & keep your duty to him He will make a way for you to get out of every difficulty, make your matter easy for you and He will remit your sins and will enlarge your provision! Allah, the Most High, says in the Holy Quran (interpretation of the meaing):

65:2. �.And whosoever fears All�h and keeps his duty to Him, He will make a way for him to get out (from every difficulty)��

65:4��and whosoever fears All�h and keeps his duty to Him, He will make his matter easy for him.

65:5. �.and whosoever fears All�h and keeps his duty to Him, He will remit his sins from him, and will enlarge his reward.

May Allah help you & us to adhere to His Religion. May Allah guide us to His Straight Way.
