Also called the Makkah Metro, the project was originally planned to be a monorail, but was changed to a conventional steel-wheel, steel-rail design running on a viaduct. The photo posted by abuayisha is similar to the mono rail that was proposed, but not of the Saudi Metro. As per the news report which I have copy-pasted above, the train runs on tracks like any other train but the only difference is that the tracks are overhead/elevated as also the the stations.
