I know it is the first of the five pillars of faith but is it something you recite or something you believe? And if it is recited can it be spoken in any language, or is it only to be spoken in arabic?

Bismillah,

Why recite it if you don't believe it?

People feel differently about whether it and salat (formal prayer) has to be in Arabic or not.  Regardless of that, many, many people say that and salat in different languages.

If you believe in the shehada then you are a muslim . You recite it infront of witnesses in order to declare yr islam.

Assalamu Alaikum,

I just wanted to add that since the Qur'an was revealed in Arabic many
Muslims feel that salaat should be said in Arabic. It gives Muslims a
sense of unity knowing no matter what nationality or race you are, we all
pray with "one voice" you may say. Of course I know I don't speak for
every Muslim out there. But since the shahadah is said within the salaat
we tend to pronounce our shahadah in Arabic although saying it in any
language makes you a Muslim because Allah (swt) knows what's in our
hearts.

Peace,
J.R.

Islam makes sense and is logical and there is opinions of great scholars that Reverts should make prayer in their own language untill they can learn arabic at their own pace.

Have fun with logical Islam
