Those are two different thesis papers waiting to be written.

If one simply looks at Africa as a land mass, then it could be said that Islam first arrived in Africa peacefully when the first Muslim refugees sought refuge in Abyssinia from Makkan oppression.

The first diplomatic contact between the Prophet (saaw) as a ruler and the Egyptian ruler occurred after the treaty of Hudaibiyah.  However, apparently Egypt then was still a province of the Roman empire, and therefore the Roman response to diplomacy shaped the Muslim relations with Egypt. Since Roman emperior Heraclius chose to side with the Ghassani Christian king who killed the Muslim emissary and arbitrarily declared war on the Islamic state, then Egypt too was cast as a subordinate province of Rome and was at war with the Islamic state.

In contrast, the Abyssinian Christian kingdom never sided with the Romans, allowing for it to sign a peace pact with the Islamic state which lasted for centuries.

Eventually, as the Muslim armies under khalif Umar (rah) defeated the Persians and then the Romans, Egypt was liberated. And since most of north Africa had Roman ties, alliances, or connections (even only loosely) and they failed to distinguish themselves from Rome's treachery, they too were at war with the Islamic state.

After the liberation of North Africa, trade spread Islam throughout the Pan Sahel, East Africa, and into West Africa. Sometimes it was slave trade, but most trade was normal goods, textiles, minerals, dyes, etc.

In natural business relations, Muslims carried da`wah. And the leaders of the Muslims, the khulafa and wulaa, intentionally sought and encouraged Muslim businessmen of excellent character to advance trade with new regions as dawah carriers. This is documented.

And Allah knows best.....

Let there arise from amongst you a group inviting to all that is good, enjoining what is right, forbidding what is wrong, and they are the successful ones. Al Imran:104

Here's a blurb from a fantastic and informative site (as usual!) from the BBC - in fact, you almost surely find more high quality work on West African Islamic expansion in your local ibraries!

Islam

"The Mohammedan Negro has felt nothing of the withering power of caste. There is nothing in his colour or race to debar him from the highest privileges, social or political, to which any other Muslim can attain." - Edward W. Blyden, Liberian writer and thinker.

According to Arab oral tradition, Islam first came to Africa with Muslim refugees fleeing persecution in the Arab peninsula. This was followed by a military invasion, some seven years after the death of the prophet Mohammed in 639, under the command of the Muslim Arab General, Amr ibn al-Asi. It quickly spread West from Alexandria in North Africa (the Maghreb), reducing the Christians to pockets in Egypt, Nubia and Ethiopia.

Islam came to root along the East African coast some time in the 8th century, as part of a continuing dialogue between the people on the East coast and traders from the Persian Gulf and Oman. Like early Christianity, Islam was monotheistic, that is, Muslims worship only one God.

Islam was a modernising influence, imposing a consistent order among different societies, strengthening powers of government and breaking down ethnic loyalties.

Unlike Christianity, Islam tolerated traditional values, allowing a man to have more than one wife. For many, this made conversion to Islam easier and less upsetting than conversion to Christianity.

In the early centuries of its existence, Islam in Africa had a dynamic and turbulent history, with reforming movements and dynasties clashing and succeeding each other. Gaining power depended on securing trade routes into gold-producing areas in Sub-Saharan Africa. Islamic rulers expanded north as well as south. In the last quarter of the 11th century, Islam dominated the Mediterranean world.

In the 14th century the Black Death came from Europe and seriously undermined the social and economic life of North Africa, or the Maghreb, as it is known. However, Islam remained the dominant religion.

From the 16th to the 19th century, much of the Maghreb was under Ottoman rule. By the 1880s, Islam had taken root in one third of the continent.

Asalamu Alaikum.Brother,it all started in my home country Ethiopia, when Prophet Muhammad (صلى ألله عليه وسلم) sent his followers there.King Nejashi welcomed them very much in Negash. When Quraish heard that, theythought 9 x about the trade and what the migration would increase in Islamic Dawah & growth. So, they tried to eradicate it by sending Amr & Abdullah , 2 evil and strong messengers to Nejashi. At this point,Jafar (RA) told Nejashi about Islam,
[DIV]the solution for humanity. As time passed, many Islamic kingdoms spread in many countries including Ethiopia, for when Nejashi heard this,he cried and tears flowed out of his eyes.Let us take the Ethiopian Walasma dynasty of Ifat (1258-1415) and the dynasty of Amirs (1415-1800s) the Walasmaofwhichexisted for235 years. It was started by Caliph Umar Walasma, then his son Baziyu and grandson Haqqadin extended the kingdom.During the reign of Abu Bakr Walasma, the very great grandson ofUmar and the 26th Caliph of Ifat, the capital was transferred to theGreatWalled city of Harar,500-550 km (exactly 523 km) away from Addis Ababa. In 1415, the last Caliph of Ifat,Fahruddinwas expelled fromthe throne.[/DIV]
[DIV]The 2nd dynasty had 72 amirs whoruled Ethiopia (Old Ifat) for about400 years or less with Harar as their capital, while the Walasma had 27 rulers for a span of 235 years. As for Morocco and West Africa, please refer to"The Muslim World",a program about Muslim countries on Huda tv,if you can acces it on Atlantic Bird 2and other satellites. For more, please go to www.huda.tv and watch Huda tv live streaming,or if you have it,watch the Morocco or West African countries' episodes.Wassalamu Alaikum.[/Chttp://www.islamicity.com/forum/smileys/smiley10.gifOLOR][/DIV] [IMG]smileys/smiley10.gif" align="middle" />
