The issue of Music has been an issue of debate and disagreement between Muslim scholars. Since the question has been very popular, we may be doing a long feature about the subject to clarify it and deal with it in more depth. Since we are still under pressure for the number of questions, we will give you a brief answer. The way we see it is that Islamic Law allows the listening to music under strict guidelines and conditions: First, it shouldn't be the type that is loud, violent, and tough such as Hard Rock, Heavy Metal, etc.... If, on the other hand, it is calm and allows time for relaxation and contemplation, then it is permissible. Second, it should not have any parts that excite, arouse sexual feelings, or any other behavior such as suicide or violence. In that way, soft music is permissible. Also, as in any activity, it should never take away from any prescribed worshipping activities such as prayers. It is important here to note that Islamic Law requires a person to read and listen to the Quran to appreciate it, understand it, and reflect on the signs Allah Almighty has revealed. This can be done early in the morning, late at night, or at any time of the day. What was said about music is different, because music should be listened to under guidelines, and as a mean of occasional relaxation. It should not be at the expense of the Qur'an or any other Islamic activity. Allah knows best.

Narrated Abu 'Amir or Abu Malik Al-Ash'ari: that he heard the Prophet
saying, "From among my followers there will be some people who will
consider illegal sexual intercourse, the wearing of silk, the drinking
of alcoholic drinks and the use of musical
instruments, as lawful. And there will be some people who will stay
near the side of a mountain and in the evening their shepherd will come
to them with their sheep and ask them for something, but they will say
to him, 'Return to us tomorrow.' Allah will destroy them during the
night and will let the mountain fall on them, and He will transform the
rest of them into monkeys and pigs and they will remain so till the Day
of Resurrection." (Book #69, Hadith #494v)

Bismillah, How can anyone be proud to be British? Britain is the third most hated country in the world. The Union Jack is drenched in the blood of our brothers and sisters across Iraq, Afghanistan, and Palestine. Our history is steeped in the blood of colonialism, rooted in slavery, brutality, torture, and oppression. Allah, SWT, tells us to be humble and greatful. Should we even be "proud" to be Muslim? As I am ashamed of the evil things my American government does, I am not ashamed to be a human, an earthling, with an American passport. That's just the way it is. I need my passport to travel in this world. It's the law. Our paperwork dehumanizes those who have no access or means to pay for them. For the flag, it doesn't shame me as it is a piece of cloth. It does represent the fight for freedom of the colonists years ago, but I can see why many people hate it and burn it. |

Bismillah, Do we blame the out-of-control sisters? Or do we blame the organizers for allowing this sort of excessive behavior which demeans Islam? Or do we blame the artists themselves? Allah, SWT, holds each of us repsonsible for our own behavior. How many will jump up and down and wave their arms in the air, shouting wildly for justice for our kin in Kashmir, Afghanistan, Chechnya, Palestine, and Iraq? There are many more killing fields as well across the Asian and Arab world. Will you climb on theater chairs and express your rage over Guantanamo Bay and other gulags where our brothers and sisters are being tortured, raped, sodomized, beaten, and burned? We can care for others suffering and still experience joy and happiness in our own lives.
