Dear Reader,

Thank you for your question.  We are impressed that at your young age, you are thoughtful enough to care about doing the right thing.  Your question is one that a lot of teenagers and young adults have to deal with.  In our opion, this situation is not simply a matter of "boy + girl = automatically haram." There are several factors to consider.

In your case, you mentioned that:

  • You and your friend are both around 13 years old or younger.
  • He is not your mahram.
  • The gathering is at his family's house.
  • It is a group gathering, not a private meeting.

Since you mentioned that he is not your mahram, you probably already know that Islam forbids khulwah (when an unrelated male and female are alone together in a private place where others cannot easily enter). Since you say you will not be alone at all, this specific issue does not necessarily apply if you are not in a private place alone with him, within the home.

That being said, Islam also teaches modesty and encourages appropriate boundaries between boys and girls as they grow older. Even if something is technically permissible, Muslims should avoid situations that could lead to temptation, inappropriate behavior, or misunderstandings.

What you didn't mention is whether there would be responsible adults supervising this gathering.  This is really very important because although you may not technically be alone, in the absence of responsible adult supervision, a lot of things could still go wrong.

Also, you didn't mention if you had asked your parents for permission to attend.  Given your young age, this is also an important factor to consider.

If your parents are ok with you attending, and if the gathering is supervised by responsible adults, and if nothing inappropriate is happening, then we believe, and God knows best, that it could be okay for you to attend.

On the other hand, if the gathering involved being alone together, inappropriate behavior, secrecy from your parents, or activities that go against Islamic values, then you should not attend, even if technically there would be other people in the house.

In peace.
