Taking my dead grandfather's old age allowance

Asked by Reader on Oct 26, 2025 Topic: Other

Dear Hadi,

My grandfather died in 2022 and he was receiving an “old age allowance” from our government in Bangladesh. I am 20 years old and since his death, I have been taking that allowance. Is it halal to take that money?

Dear Reader,

Here in the United States, the closest thing to what you’re describing are social security payments, and taking the social security payments of a deceased individual would be against the law and considered fraud.  Unless the Bangladeshi government explicitly allows for the heirs of a deceased individual to continue receiving these “old age allowances,” you are likely breaking the law.  These payments are a social safety net for the elderly in your society.  You are only 20 years old and are not entitled to “old age allowance payments.”  We believe, and God knows best, that you taking this allowance is not halal, and you should immediately stop taking it.

In peace.
