1. Take the initiative. Change is a verb. You have to first change to see the change

"And that human can have nothing but what he does (good or bad), and that his deeds will be seen." (An-Najm 53:39-40)

"Verily never will Allah change the condition of a people until they change it themselves." (Ar-Ra'ad 13:11)

2. Don't procrastinate. Start from this moment

The companion Abdullah Ibn Omar (Allah be pleased with him) used to say, "When the evening comes, do not wait for the morning; and when the morning comes, do not wait for the evening." - Collected by Al-Bukhari

3. Start with baby steps and achievable goals

The Prophet  said to his companions, "Is it difficult for any of you to recite one third of the Quran in one night?" This suggestion was difficult for them so they said, "Who among us has the power to do so, O Allah's Apostle?" Allah Apostle replied, "'Allah (the) One, the Self-Sufficient Master Whom all creatures need.' (Surat Al-Ikhlas 112:1-4) is equal to one third of the Quran." - Collected by Al-Bukhari

The Prophet  said, "Is one amongst you powerless to get one thousand virtues every day." Amongst those who had been sitting there, one asked, "How one amongst us can get one thousand virtues every day?" He said, "Recite sub-hana Allah " one hundred times for (by reciting them) one thousand virtues are recorded (to your credit) and one thousand vices are removed." - Collected by Muslim

4. Be consistent. A small step a day, but for everyday

A'isha reported Allah's Messenger  as saying, "The acts most pleasing to Allah are those which are done continuously, even if they are small." And when A'isha did any act she did it continuously." - Collected by Muslim

5. Make sure you are changing towards the right direction

6. Have a support group for your change

7. Be patient

The above three tips are mentioned in Surah Al-A'sr 103:1-3.

"By (the Token of) Time (through the Ages), Verily Man is in loss, Except such as have Faith, and do righteous deeds, and (join together) in the mutual teaching of Truth, and of Patience and Constancy."

8. Never give up. If you trip, start again

"Allah accepts only the repentance of those who do evil in ignorance and foolishness and repent soon afterwards; it is they to whom Allah will forgive and Allah is Ever AllKnower, AllWise." (An-Nisa 4:17)

The Prophet  said, "All children of Adam are sinners, and the best sinners are those who repent." - Collected by Al-Termithi

9. Keep your eyes on the prize -  achievement, triumphant, and satisfaction

"Verily this is the supreme achievement! For the like of this let all strive, who wish to strive." (As-Saffat 37:60-61)

10. Always ask God for help

Allah's Prophet  used to say, "O Allah! I seek refuge with You from incapacity and laziness, from cowardice and geriatric old age, and I seek refuge with You from the afflictions of life and death, and I seek refuge with You from the punishment of the grave." - Collected by Al-Bukhari

May Allah give us istiqamah (steadfastness)!Allahu Akbar as if it was
like yesterday we were welcoming 2013 and it has gone forever and now
we have just begun the new year 2014 CE. This reminds us that the
clock is still ticking and will not stop the ticking tick until we
arrive in Qabar. Therefore as the Prophet (S.A.W) said a wise person is
he who controls himself and makes preparation for the hereafter. We
pray Allah bring first hidayah to the Ummah in general Muslims and
Non-Muslims alike particularly the Muslims we all go back to Quran and
Sunnah then we will be guided.

Please Br. Ahmad Alsawi, do not talk about Islam in the fold of Nijasah. Your article New year, new plan, new self talks about what we Muslims to do, but your whole premise is based on a calendar which is based on Shirk. If you are a Muslim, your year has already begun 2 months ago. Br. Alsawi, I suggest that you go and read Surah TAUBA ayah number 37. You should never suggest what you are in the fold of ways of Jews and Christians. They are Najis based on Quran because they commit Shirk. The Origin of Gregorian calendar based on Shirk

I m very impressed with the comments posted esp by Babandi A Gunwei. It is well said and his comments wake me up. We hardy have time for our religion as we r all engaged with our worldly affairs. I realised how true it is that we are neglecting islam and worse still, we are not doing anything about it. Who is to blame for all this? Is it the people ? or is it the surrrounding? I hope things will change for the better and all muslim brothers and sisters stay united and preach the whole world that islam is peaceful religion.

I just want to comment on the Islamic year calander. I think it is high time that the entire Muslims in the whole world should start celebrating the New Islamic Year by dedicating 1St of Muharram of every Islamic Year a work free day to all Muslims in the world. I equally suggest that the Muslim council of every particular country should be encourage to do the same by addressing this issue to the government and making it sure that the request is granted.
It is high time that we should stop seeing other peaple celebrating thier New Year with work free day.

BABANDI A. GUMEL FROM U.K said:
Every new year reminds us that our time in this world is nearly coming to an end.It is not something that we should be celebrating rather we should be reflecting as to how much did we obey Allah in the year before. If we did not do much we should make firm resolution to obey Him this year with more determined zeal. So what about our sheer unfortunate misfortune of total disobedience? We must reflect with the intention to make amends for good as no one knows when he or she is going to leave this world. We are busy in our worldly pursuit not knowing the Angel of death is hovering just above our heads may be we are among those slated to leave this world for the hereafter in the year 2008.Then who knows what will happen tommorrow or next day as no one knows except Alimul Ghaib Washahadat that is Allah the ALL Knowing of Open things and Hidden with complete Knowledge. He is more closer to us than our Jugular Vein such is His Knowledge and Awareness encompassing everything in the Sky and the Earth and what is between them. He is aware of every atom, even what we are thinking at this very moment. Therefore our real resolution of the new year is that we should make intention to change for the better. It is not a question of only celebrating for the sake of celebration when we see others are doing. Then if one is dying what is the use of these celebrations. So our best celebration is to obey Allah and follow the Sunnah of Rasullah then we will become successful in both this life and the ever lasting life of the Hereafter.May Allah give all of us taufiq to follow His Commands and the Istiqamah (steadfastness) to follow Allah and the complete Sunnah Way of Rasulullah. As they said Istiqamah is better than Karamah so this is our real resolution for the year 2008 we must change for the better and invite every one to the Deen of Allah so they can become successful in this life after death in Qabar and when they are ressurected and finally gain entry into Paradise ever lasting Confort.

Mashallah Brother Alsawi has really described the beautiful facts of life. As Allah Talha has made so easy for us Human beings to earn rewards, by simply following few basic steps. I never new how easy its for us to earn so much reward for (Surat Al-Ikhlas 112 verse one to the end) is equal to one third of the Quran." - Collected by Al-Bukhari. Also earning one thousand virtues every day, bu just reciting "Sub-hana Allah " one hundred times. Its just a praise that we are offering and when Allah Talha agrees with us and Inshallah all our problems will be solved. May Allah guide me and all my Muslim Brothers and Sisters and all Humanity.

Ameen

The single drop of water does not out weight the entire rain storm; but a rain storm can start with a single drop. This article is practical, useful and very much Islamic.

Islamic for a day- Islam for all days- just dont ever give up . As for taking baby steps- babies are never afraid when they fall- they simply get up and try again. I love thier enthusiasm. I love articles like this. It gives me strength to move through each day while witnessing so much evil through this world.

The author has missed out charitable acts in his list. Only by giving more (without expecting any return) can self revival be complete. Whether this is in the form of time spent on with our kids, helping a poor needy person or a relative can self-revival be complete.
Ofcourse remembering Allah should be first and foremost.
