A high-level eruption took place at Semeru volcano, East Java, Indonesia on December 4, 2021.
The ash cloud was estimated rising up to 15 km above sea level. Some people were hiding in the local mosque in Besuk Kobokan, as ash and smoke turned day into night.
Authorities reported extensive damage to buildings, cars, roads, and farms. The eruption covered villages in ashfall and people run from billowing clouds of ash and debris. Hot ash clouds fell on the village of Sapitarang in the Pronojivo region. In several other villages roads were blocked by mud and fallen trees.
Ash has completely blocked out the Sun over the area. Several of sand miners were trapped near mines. Authorities were setting up evacuation tents, but evacuations have been hampered by thick smoke.
Semeru is among Indonesia's nearly 130 active volcanoes.
