The Ability to See the Signs of God

Say: "Praise be to God. He will show you His Signs and you will recognize them. Your Lord is not heedless of anything you do." (Surat an-Naml: 93)

In today's society, people assess the Quran very differently from what is the real purpose of its revelation. In the Islamic world, in general, very few people know the contents of the Quran.

Some Muslims often hang the Quran on the walls of their houses within a decorative cover and elderly people read it from time to time. They assume that the Quran protects those who read it from "misfortune and trouble". According to this superstition, they consider the Quran a sort of amulet against misfortunes.

The Quranic verses, however, inform us that the purpose of the Quran's revelation is entirely different from what is mentioned above. For instance, in the 52nd verse of Surah Ibrahim, God states: "This is a communication to be transmitted to mankind so that they can be warned by it and so that they will know that He is One God and so that people of intelligence will pay heed." In many other verses, God emphasizes that one of the most crucial purposes of the Quran's revelation is to invite people to ponder.

In the Quran, God invites people to reject blindly accepting the beliefs and values society imposes on them and to ponder by pushing aside all the prejudices, taboos and constraints on their minds.

Man must think on how he came into being, what is the purpose of his life, why he will die and what awaits him after death. He must question how he himself and the whole universe came into existence and how they continue to exist. While doing this, he must relieve himself of all constraints and prejudices.

By thinking, while isolating his conscience from all social, ideological and psychological obligations, the person should eventually perceive that the entire universe, including himself, is created by a superior power. Even when he examines his own body or any other thing in nature, he will see an impressive harmony, plan and wisdom at work within its design.

At this point again, the Quran guides man. In the Quran, God guides us as to what we should reflect on and investigate. With the methods of reflection given in the Quran, he who has faith in God will better perceive God's perfection, eternal wisdom, knowledge and power in His creation. When a believing person starts to think in the way shown in the Quran, he soon realizes that the whole universe is a sign of God's power and art, and that, "nature is a work of art, not the artist itself". Every work of art exhibits the exceptional skills of the one who has made it and conveys his messages.

In the Quran, people are summoned to contemplate numerous events and objects that clearly testify to the existence and uniqueness of God and His attributes. In the Quran, all these beings that bear witness are designated as "signs", meaning "tested evidence, absolute knowledge and expression of truth". Therefore, the signs of God comprise all the beings in the universe that disclose and communicate the being and attributes of God. Those who can observe and remember will see that the entire universe is only composed of the signs of God.

This, indeed, is the responsibility of mankind; to be able to see the signs of God... Thus, such a person will come to know the Creator who created him and all other things, draw closer to Him, discover the meaning of his existence and his life and so prosper.

Each thing, the breaths a human takes, political and social developments; the cosmic harmony in the universe, the atom, which is one of the smallest pieces of matter, is each a sign of God and they all operate under His control and knowledge, abiding by His laws. Recognizing and knowing the signs of God calls for personal effort. Everyone will recognize and know the signs of God in accordance with his own wisdom and conscience.

Undoubtedly, some guidelines may also help. As the first step, one can investigate certain points stressed in the Quran in order to acquire the mentality that perceives the whole universe as an articulation of the things created by God.

God's signs in nature are emphasized in Surat an-Nahl:

It is He who sends down water from the sky. From it you drink and from it come the shrubs among which you graze your herds. And by it He makes crops grow for you and olives and dates and grapes and fruit of every kind. . There is certainly a sign in that for people who reflect. He has made the night and the day subservient to you, and the sun, the moon and the stars, all subject to His command. There are certainly signs in that for people who use their intellect. And also the things of varying colors He has created for you in the earth. There is certainly a sign in that for people who pay heed. It is He who made the sea subservient to you so that you can eat fresh flesh from it and bring out from it ornaments to wear. And you see the ships cleaving through it so that you can seek His bounty, and so that perhaps you may show thanks. He cast firmly embedded mountains on the earth so it would not move under you, and rivers and pathways so that perhaps you might be guided, and landmarks. And they are guided by the stars. Is He Who creates like him who does not create? So will you not pay heed? (Surat an-Nahl: 10-17)

In the Quran, God invites men of understanding to think about the issues which other people overlook, or just dismiss using such barren terms as "evolution", "coincidence", or "a miracle of nature".

In the creation of the heavens and the earth, and the alternation of night and day, there are Signs for people of intelligence: those who remember God standing, sitting and lying on their sides, and reflect on the creation of the heavens and the earth: "Our Lord, You did not create this for nothing. Glory be to You! So guard us from the punishment of the Fire. (Surah Ali-'Imran: 190-191)

As we see in these verses, people of understanding see the signs of God and try to comprehend His eternal knowledge, power and art by remembering and reflecting on them, for God's knowledge is limitless, and His creation flawless.

For men of understanding, everything around them is a sign of this creation.

    Too often do we take for granted the beautiful bounties of Allah. Too often do we take for granted what Allah has put on earth for us to enjoy and endeavor. Too often do we glide by the mountains, ocean, and look up into the sky not realizing how lucky we are. To say Alhamdillah in prayer is not enough. Everytime we pass by a moutain, the sea, take a deep breath, look up into the sky to see the stars, moon, sun, or clouds we should say Alhamdillah, Allah Akbar, and SupanAllah. How often do we do this though?

    Mankind is blinded by the mundane things of earth!We have chosen to pay heed to that which draws away from Allah, and invest our time seeking thatw hich will become our enemy on the day of Resurrection! The Quran admonishes us against this and warns of the conquences of these actions. It also indicates the ultimate benefits that the Believers would enjoy as a result of their tremendous sacrifice in this life. Have we learnt thus far? Some of us, yes. OTHERS? Your guess is as good as mine!

    The Quran is the most comprehensive manual for mankind. Yet, we have chosen to ignore its remedies! What a waste!

    By the way, Evolution and Science in general does NOT claim that the world is a matter of pure chance. Please refer to Richard Dawkins books, "The Blind Watchmaker" and also "Climbing Mount Improbable". It is totally erroneous and misleading to say that Evolution is based on pure chance. That simply shows your failure to understand what Evolution is.

  6. Dr Syed Alwi from Singapore

    You don't need to go so far. Just bring forth scientific evidence confirming the existence of the Unseen (the "ghaib"). But you cannot do it - because there is NO evidence whatsoever. You believe because you were brought up to believe....You with your beliefs and I with mine. The business of religion is the business of FAITH and NOT SCIENCE. Faith is belief without proof. But Science rests on proof. Science and Religion can never go hand in hand.

  7. Abu Rahim from USA

    First I must say Darwin was right about evolution. He was simple incomplete in his explanation. He understood part of physical development but made no attempt to seek out a spiral balance.

    It is Rabbil-alamin who created the world in evolutionary stages (Al Fatiha 1:2 ) Al-hamdu lillahi Rabbil-alamin.

    And this creation look, smell, taste, and behave just like Allah. It is the force within us humans that is so often misunderstood, therefore misdirected by us. But ye shall not will except as Allah wills- Rabbil-alamin. (81:29)

    We also build monuments to our own altered ego, name large areas of land to honor ourselves; but Allah is the creator of all things, and He is the guardian and disposer of all affaires (Al Zumar 39:62). We try hard in our little lives to duplicate the beauty of nature but the awesome beauty, symmetry, and familiar design of Allah is too great to imitate. So we are left wandering how can it be. But we must agree and conclude that this complex and majestic world has evolved by no means accidentally. Only when we merge science with religion will we truly understand the beauty of it all.

    This should no longer be difficult to grasps. We use theoretical means to explain certain scientific concepts; (don't we?) Then while should we only demand absolute proof when discussing God (Allah)?.

    You see the musician by the music you hear, the painter by the painting you see. It is the creator we see when we look a creation. It should also be the creator we see when we look at each other; but like Darwin we only see the material.

    Through faith and understanding we must strive to become one with our beautiful creator Allah, Rabil- alamin. Al humndiAllah

  8. Zuhair Syed from Canada

    Some brothers fail to realize that the universe is a miracle and that science complements creation. This is concrete evidence that God exists because you have to look around at the world you see. Could this have come into existence by chance as evolutionists claim? NO. Therefore, this is the art of an All-Mighty Creator. It is obvious that God exists but many people are oblivious to it. They ask for scientific evidence and when you give it to them, they divert the topic. The fact of the matter is Science proves Creationism although people don't realize. If anyone would like scientific evidence, I can gladly email it to you. But in brief it would constitute genetic evidence, cellular evidence, the origins of matter, the laws of physics, chemistry etc.

    AN Intelligent Universe.

    1400 years ago, GOD has told us in the Quran that He called to univers into balance and it responded and obeyed. He offered trust "Amanah" to the heavens and the Earths but they declined.

    Recently futurescientfic discovries have shown this to be a very intelligent universe desingned and formed in such a way that something very great is behind it all. Afterall who would be stupid enough to see a brand new car and suggest that it came about from thin air or that person seeing a computer or airplane for the first time believe that no body created it.Well we the "people of knowledge" do know where these items came from or how they came about

    Dr Alawi writes:

    "There has never ever been any concrete proof for the existence of God"

    I am not into philosophy - i was until I realised it does not get you anywhere - keep it simple. An old Arab was asked whether God exists. He said when I look at the footprints of a camel, I know camel has been on this track. When I see human footprint, I know human has been on this track and when I look at the skies, the earth with all its intiricate designs, I know God exists.

    Brother, read the Quran before dawn and contemplate on its words. It will burn your heart out. Until God's love burns your soul, you will never understand the power of the Creator. True Quran says the only way to God is through Islam. I'm not sure if you know Arabic but the word is derived from its root word of S-L-M. It means peace but with full consent. I.E. it means Submission. To submit oneslef to the will of God and trust in Him to lead you through the right path. Now you can be a Christian, a Jew, a Bhuddist or any other faith, but be a Christian who submits, a Bhuddist who submits, etc. Then God will show you the way to His door. Truth remains clear from falsehood, only for those who truly seek it. God bless us all and may He our hearts with His love so that we can have the wisdom to see His Way. Only then inner peace will come to us. Everything else in this world will assuredly give us headache and confusion. Chew that!

  11. Dr Syed Alwi from Singapore

    You see what you want to see. There has never ever been any concrete proof for the existence of God. Harun Yahya has long been discredited on his pseudo-scientific views which are totally flawed. All religions are good. As long as you keep it at a superficial level. But when you go around saying that your religion is the only true religion - then I think that you are inviting trouble. After all - wasn't it God who created Humanity to be of different cultures and religions ? Most of us are followers of our parents and society. I see nothing wrong with that. That is why I totally reject the concept of an "absolute truth".

    Can you produce for us an alternative universe to live in;

    You know You and I are real

    The world is real

    The universe is real

    The earth is real

    The heavenly bodies are real

    Unless one has no faculty of seeing or feeling

    You and I are real

    Our death is real

    With death our souls depart from our bodies

    Bodies that return to mother earth

    Same Mother earth that we have been created from

    If one could look into the eyes of death and halt it even for a second;

    Then I could say you could have a chance to challenge me;

    But you and me know that we have a destiny together;

    You and I were born one day out of millions days

    A day that humanity rejoiced our arrival on earth

    To witness creation beyond our thinking

    When atoms, molecules in heaven and earth rejoiced on such day;

    A creation neither you nor me have control over

    You and I took their journey to adulthood

    To reason, to reflect to search

    Our paths became separated

    We both yearned to seek the treasure behind our destiny;

    For me I found my answers with Allah but you are still searching;

    Searching for God, the Truth

    Surely, our reunion will be real one day

    Until such time let us wonder off to search for the treasure;

    For Allah said that He is a treasure to be found

    Let us leave our ego behind and hunt for the treasure

    A journey that will end one day to form a new reunion;

    Until such time reflect brother or sister

    For you own nothing in this world

    Yet you borrow and borrow

    Until such time you can not borrow no more

    And reality will hit you in the face

    When death arrives to mark our reality

    Reality of our union with God/Allah the creator of the universe and mankind

    'Good' and 'bad', my friend, as we perceive it, is a relative thing. All that is bad brings some good to somebody. Even the worst hate and wars may bring good in that it may cause believers to return to God when they may have strayed. Much as I myself have often found difficult to accept, I do understand that both what we see as 'good' or 'bad' - whether it happens to ourselves or others - are situations that we are to use to get closer to God, and to a more perfect understanding of ourselves. What you desire for yourselves may not be what is best for you, and what you despise may be what you need. One can only try, but at the same time ask that God give you what is best for you.

    Dear Kihei, of course everything is created by Allah. The things that you don't like or hate most are also the creation of Allah. I and many others know it for certainty. There is no 'ifs' about it. What does it has to do with your arriving at the conclusion that you are not going to trust in God ? I think you are missing something.

    No matter you trust in God or not, everything comes from Allah (as you yourself have observed hopefully). A person who seeks the truth accepts this fact of life and then he submits completely to Allah. And guess what, it is a promise of Allah that those who submits are winners. And those who doesn't submit and show prides instead ( I sincerely hope that you are not this type) are losers.

    Islam in not a utopian religion. You observe the facts of your life and then you make your choice. Either you submit or you don't. The choice is yours.

    Also, what is ultimately good or evil is very hard to judge. A beliver is firm in his/ her belief that after everything, Allah is just and everyone gets his / her due share. This is the final judgement with 0% injustice. Now, whether you like it or not is your business. The truth is out there!

    Well yeah .

    Everything is a sign of god but at this everything you must add also the bad that comes with any nature of things... storms .. wars...

    If this is a God of Creation i'm not going to trust in something that is pure good but in something that does not support we humans in our walking in the ages...

    supreme truth does not exist.. And for sure this can not come from the mouth of a human

    I can not trust in what masses believe only to make them slaves of what u name truth

    yes all lives are amazing , the whole Universe is

    but this can not save us from our nature of animals , vita mea mors tua .

  24. Usman Ali Hannan from Bangladesh

    Dear Muhammad, I don't understand what you are getting at! You sounded a bit angry and disturbed. I wonder what the reason is! Pardon me if I am wrong.

    Obviously both parties that you have mentioned are on the false track. However, you should note that 'assuming a superiority over other believers' or 'justifying ones own prejudices' are highly subjective terms. Of course one can follow such a devious track. But think twice before negatively labelling someone too early. Because your own labelling may bounce back to yourself!! It may so happen that you might suddenly find yourself standing on thin water and the person you are accusing standing on solid ground! Believe me brother, it happens. It happens to many of us.

    So why don't we keep patience and let things go (I don't mean being passive, but I mean being non-reactionary to new ideas and concepts). If you decisivly want to show that somebody's arguments is not based on the Qur'an and authentic hadiths, you have to do so by using these very two sources, and not otherwise!! So we have an objective tool on which to launch reigorous debate and arguments!! This is a very healthy approach. Hence there is no necessity to get frustrated.

    Truth has its own force and it is the rule of Allah that truth always wins in the long run. Falsehood perishes sooner or later.

    Brother Muhammad, forgive me if I have deviated from the main issue a bit.

  25. Usman Ali Hannan from Bangladesh.

    Hi Trinity,I read your arguments with great interest.

    You know Trinity, what God wants us is to use our head to search the truth. However, if we use our head to prove that 'Trinity' is true, then we are accepting it as truth beforehand and then we are giving all our energy to prove it. I would humbly request you to reflect whether you or anyone else attached to 'Trinity' is following this path.

    That you have found so much manifestations of three is wonderful. I would humbly ask you reflect what it has to do with God? What you have shown is a lovely theology literature that may spellbound the students of some theology school. But a person objectively searching the truth will find no substance in it. Dear Trinity, I request you to reflect and ponder objcetively.

    In order to prove 'Trinity', you have associated god with many other forces of nature. It sounds great, but what prove do you have? Please reflect over this question one more time and ask yourself, "What proof do I have for these associations that I am making?" This question is very important. Don't ignore it Trinity !

    One of the most objective books (actually I think it is the most objective book in the world) ever to be found is the Qur'an. Why don't you give it a shot and see for yourself that there are truth which is not bounded by any theology or philosophical constraints. You know, simple truths have a wonderful attraction!! Once you get the taste of it, you can hardly resist it.

    The author Harun Yahya has a wonderful website. You may try that too. I am sure you will like it.

    I did some minor trivial research. I posted it on a forum:

    You may go through it in your spare time. I tried to avoid philosophy and theology and I tried to search the truth.

    This is quite a timely article. I just read an article about the evidence that God is indeed one God in three persons. This is an excerpt from the article:

    As a painter reveals part of himself, his style, what he is, in his painting, so too, God has revealed part of Himself, His style, and what He is in His creation. Creation reflects, to a large degree, the qualities of God Himself. Let's take a look.

    1.The universe is ordered; therefore, we know that God is a God of order.

    2.The universe operates on laws; therefore, God is a God of law.

    3.The universe has a beginning; therefore, God is the creator.

    4.In mathematics, there is an infinity of numbers. In the universe there is an infinity of distance; Therefore, God the creator of the universe, is infinite.

    5.Absolute truths exist in creation, (i.e., something can not be both itself and not itself at the same time); therefore, God is absolute truth.

    6.The universe is comprised of three primary aspects: Space, Time, and Matter.

    A.Space is comprised of height, width, and depth - a trinity - but each aspect is by nature space.

    B.Time is comprised of past, present, and future - a trinity - but each aspect is by nature time.

    C.Matter is comprised of solid, liquid, and gas - a trinity - but each aspect is by nature matter.

    Therefore, we can conclude from looking at the universe, and God as its creator, that it is possible for God to have a trinitarian aspect to His nature since we see it in nature. If it is fair to say that God may indeed be trinitarian in some aspect of His nature,then God could easily be trinitarian in nature and still be the one and only God. It seems that as these fundamental components of the universe are composed of trinities one should not be surprised God's nature is Trinitarian also.

    This article summarizes why we Muslims (and

    non-Muslims) as well need to pay heed to our

    surroundings more. I definitely agree, each

    particular in reality from an atom to the

    formation of a mountain is indeed something

    very artistic, creative and spritual. As a Muslim

    it doesn't take one of monotheistic faith to

    realize how fantastic creation is, and indeed

    science tries to exploit this as a symbol of

    "coincidence." Of course not all scientific

    theoris lead to the denouncing of God the

    general opinion is that god cannot be explain.

    But regardless I believe that this should be an

    understanding (perhaps an additionbal creed

    along with Shahadatain) that individual before

    knowing (or converting) to Islam must

    understand the nature of Islam, and what

    Islam means. Not necessarily going back to

    the Arabic fundamentals of each word and

    letter in the Qur'an but its ultimate purpose of

    the message nd how one truly knows God.

    this is what I call "true monotheism."

I agree with brother Usman Ali Hannan, our scholars scare people away from the Quran by saying it is too difficult to understand,and I have heard this statement too many times. I say it is not. It is a clear book, with clear signs. As the Quran says. The difference is that at different ages of our life we will understand it diffrently. For examaple, at age five we dont have the ability to ponder so much. The important thing is to encourage people to read it, read it again and again and think. The more you read the more you are forced to realise the Greatness of Allah. It is true, there are clear signs every where. We dont need any scholars to explain the Quran. We need scholars that encourage us to read and think, and Harun Yahya is one such scholar. Also to understand it more, emphasis should be on learning the Arabic language. But for people who dont have knowledge of Arabic, the Quran is translated in many languages. And I invite all who read this, to read the Quran, and take a moment to think. You will come to the same conclusion :

    One of my friends at the university said, "Reading Qur'an is risky, because you might end up explaining it in the wrong way." This is a common fear installed by many of the ulamas in our society. So what many youths do is they don't read the Qur'an and they go straight to the Ulama's for fatwa. I see it as ignoring the diamond and putting glass in the pocket instead.

    I heard a scholar saying that the Qur'an is very difficult for the people to understand. So they need books like " How to go to Heaven" and stuffs like that. The thing is, many people have substituted those other books and they seldom go through the Qur'an. Didn't Allah say in the Qur'an that he has made it easy for us to understand? But for whom? Those who reflect and ponder. I guess reflecting and pondering poses formidable challenge to many people. So they replace it with the cheap stuffs.

    Another common phenomenon is to read the Qur'an in Arabic without understanding it. This is very common. The sad part is no attempt is even made to understand it from the very beginning. Many don't even bother to go over the translation in his/her own language fully satisfied that he/she is getting reward for each of the letters he/she is reciting. This again shows the reluctance to think and ponder-- a quality essential to be a strong Muslim. This is the way the religious scholars just teach them. Their process is to make students memorize the Qur'an mechanically and for understanding, go for the cheap stuffs.

    If one wants to get the true taste of Islam, one would have to get it through Qur'an. Whether the Ulamas find it too risky for their dogma or whether the Qur'an is too difficult for some to understand is a secondary issue. Only after pondering and reflecting over the Qur'an can one go for other writings such as " How to go to Heaven" and stuffs like that.

    I was born a Muslim of Muslim parents and great grand parents. Though I can hear someone say "it does'nt matter, you can still be anyother thing" but not in my community where that is considered a tabboo. Anyway that is not the purpose of this introduction. When I visited the sight of Harun Yahya for the first time, I remember my exclamation thereafter "WHAT!! SO THIS IS ALLAH?" My brothers and sisters in Islam and even the non-muslims if you want to know What Allah is or is not and the purpose for which He created us and the entire universe in a "lay man's language" as they say, with evidences and so on, visit the site of HarunYahya.

    Sorry I'm not trying to advertise here in anyway, please. It just happens to be the truth. Thanks Harun Yahya. May Allah continue to give you the strength to work for Islam in this era of wishful thinking and ungodliness, Ameen.

    This marvelous analysis on the Holy Quran will provide more plesent feeling in the minds of a true beleiver towards his creator.The author of this article is correctly pointed out that many people who ponder on quranic verses did not understand the real meaning of it due to the lack of interest attach to the creator. Once you are sincire to your creator you will seek his blessing by doing sustained worship good deeds & charity . Then the almighty himself will guide his devoted servent to true path. When you become a true servent you can understand the changes in your attitudes . A true beliver will read quran with the intention of undersytand it's meaning and ponder on it's meaning and Allah will show him the right meaning of each and every verses that he reads. In this age getting the transilation of mighty Quran is not difficult. Still only people with earnest search for truth can take the benifit of real meaning of Quran with the help of Allah. Many problems facing our young Muslim Umma is due to the lack of knowledge on their faith.They turned there energy to heedless leaders on the contrary if they earnestly submit them selves to Almighty , he will guide them to the true path .

    Very good thought provoking article. Reading a single word is interpeting a sign. It is Allah who has taught us the use of the pen. We are sign readers. We receive signs thru all five senses. We must strive to follow the guidance Allah has bestowed on us coming in the form of signs from good human examples and within our selves.

    I am afraid that Islam will be read about in the history books despised like the Roman Empire,the mongols,the Nazi German,the Greece or the likes other where. Are we addressing this issue?
