CONGRESSMAN BONIOR: House Resolution 392 blindly supports Israel's actions against the Palestinians..

Mr. Speaker, I rise in strong opposition to House Resolution 392.

I do so because it undermines the Administration's desire to achieve a cease-fire, it undermines our efforts to ultimately broker a lasting and just resolution to the Arab-Israeli conflict and it runs counter to what is in our best interest in the Middle East.

And let's be clear about what we are doing.

In supporting this resolution, we are not merely expressing our "solidarity" with Israel, as the resolution's sponsors would have us believe.

Israel and the world know of the special relationship shared between Israel and the U.S.

However, this resolution blindly supports Israel's actions against the Palestinians and wholly denies the generations of suffering of the Palestinian people.

This would be wrong at any time, but in light of what has happened in Jenin, Bethlehem, Ramallah, Haifa, Jerusalem, Netanya - what continues to happen - this resolution is dangerous.

Like most Americans, I support Israel.  However, also just like most Americans, I do not support - and will not support - all Israeli policies.

Generations of Palestinians and Israelis have suffered in the region. But the violence of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict cannot be examined or addressed in isolation of the decades of occupation of millions of Palestinians.

Israeli suffering is something this body has understood and discusses.  But what of the suffering of the Palestinian people?

What of the history of land confiscation, water rights, torture, settlements, collective punishment, home demolitions, curfews, administrative detentions and expulsions?

Where is the language about well over a thousand Palestinians killed in the last 19 months - bodies found under the rubble?

Where is the language about the thousands made homeless by the bulldozers in Jenin alone?

Where is the language about relief agencies denied access to treat the sick and wounded?

We also know that relief agencies (including the International Committee of the Red Cross) were prevented from reaching, evacuating, and treating the sick and wounded throughout the West Bank resulting in untold deaths.

From the mother who bled to death from a normally non-fatal wound in front of her children - to the couple buried alive under the rubble for eight days - the stories are coming to light and they are horrific.

Rarely is there discussion on this floor of the nearly 420 Palestinian villages destroyed at the time of Israel's founding in 1948.

Or the 3.8 million refugees registered by the United Nations and the estimated 2 million others not registered.

Palestinians live in 59 different recognized refugee camps in poverty and with no hope in sight for a brighter future for the next generation born in the camps.

Can we know today what 38% unemployment in the West Bank or 75% unemployment in Gaza can do to a population?

And while we clung to the hope of the peace Oslo would bring, Palestinians saw a remarkable growth in settlements.  As of February, Peace Now estimates the settler population at 230,000, having approximately doubled in the last ten years under Oslo.

We are the only country that has been able to broker peace agreements in the Middle East.

When Palestinians are searching through the rubble of their homes and all they find are the shell casings and shrapnel bearing the "made in the USA" label, how will this resolution help them to see past that?  How will this document assist us in getting the parties back to the table?  The short answer is it won't.

We owe it to the generations of Israelis and Palestinians who want to live a life free of violence and occupation to make peace a priority again.

As Israelis deserve to live with stability and security, so too Palestinians deserve to live with dignity and justice.

- -  END - -

Congressman David E. Bonior represents Michigan's 10th Congressional District. As Democratic Whip, he is the highest-ranking person from Michigan to ever serve in the House Democratic Leadership. He is also running for Governor for the State of Michigan.

I think the US should review it's stance regarding the Middle-East issue. The question I ask, and so do many another people is whehter the US is an honest peace-broker in this issue. Does the US advocate for justice or promoting terrorism? What is not clear to me is what exactly is the US interest. It is the inability of politicians and lawmakers to clearly define the US interest that stands in their way to clearly act responsibley towards the Palestinian plight. What was the US interest that took us to the Gulf region to liberate Kuwait from Suddam invasion? Is it the same Interest we have today by allowing Israel to terrorize Palastene?
Somebody help me get answers to these questions, because I am at a lost

This resolution is a clear sign that the United States is tilted in favor of Israel in this conflict. This resolution deeply upsets me and many other people in the world. This resolution to my knowledge recieved no condemnation from the White House or from President George Bush. This shows that the majority of the world ignores the fact that the Palestinians are the victims and Israel is the aggressor.

This article should be an eye-opener for those who doesn't understand the Palestin-Israel conflict in Middle East. Unfortunately, for some people they either choose not to realise or refused to see the truth unveil right under their nose happening for years and the rest of them is simply because that is not happening in their country - so why bother! The problem with these respectable people is that not because that they don't know the truth but they just can't handle the truth. It would be too risky for them espacially when their government is administratively practice hypocracy, corruption and doublestandered policy for years.
Now, Why should I be supprised! when they are blindly supporting the Israel's actions against the Palestinians for it has been part of their norm.
To Mr Bonior, thank to Allah s.w.t that has given you an extra pair of eyes to see the real world. Amin.

It impresses me to know someone like the Congress man is standing firm against all the blind and unconditional support of the jewish state in the American legislature. It also makes me happy to know SOME form bias and prejudice is being countered by the congressman. Perhaps he understands this is what is causing the hate against Americans abroad as they cannot comprehend why the congress needs to pass a resolution in Solidarity with Israel, after the 2 Billion dollars aid the state enjoys.
All we can do is to hope for more people in the congress to subscibe to Congressman Bonior's perspective and also hope the Lobby does not vote him out of Office.
One again may Allah bring us closer to a Just resolution of the Palestian genocide sooner rather than later.
Congress Man we THANK you.

A man with the intestinal fortitude to take a lonely stand against a blind majority- how encouraging at this bleak period of human history! Would that we had more such men... And the other yaesayers- where is their sense of justice and fair play, not to say their humanity?Do they not read the papers, are they ignorant of the situation in the region? How can America claim to be an impartial broker in the conflict with this disgraceful show of hands? Not a wise or carefully considered stance. I expect more from people in their position. They do not speak for me- nor for many others. Who do they speak for?

God bless him. He is a true American working for the short and long term interset of America. The people he represents should be congradulated. I believe those representatives in the US congress are sold out to the Zionist interest group. To be honest, they to right of Sharon and Netanyahu. No doubt they get their order from Natanyahu who was here to meet with them not long ago. It is a shameful act that they have to pass the resolution blindly affirming their survitude to Sharon and his likes ignoring the US administrations warning not to do so. For those who have doubts, they should for once think who controls Amerca. Is it not time for Americans to free themselves from the yok of foriegn interest groups? Specially the zionist. Undoubtdly, this resolution is another nail on the cofen of the true interset of American people around the world.

Thanks to the American Congress for revealing their persistent but previously covert policy of injustice and hatred towards Arabs and Muslims. I am sure within few years American Politicians finaced by Jews will try to expell all the Muslims from USA as they are now openly advocating for expulsion of all Palestinians from their Homes in West Bank. In fact both of these two countries were founded by killing and exploiting the original people(First Nation peoples and Arabs).
