Fasting in a Time of Conflict: Ramadan, Sabr, and Moral Clarity

As the blessed month of Ramadan unfolds, Muslims around the world are observing a time of fasting, reflection, and spiritual renewal. Yet this year, Ramadan has been overshadowed by a devastating war on Iran by the United States and Israel, launched on February 28, 2026. Reports indicate that more than one thousand targets have been struck, including civilian infrastructure such as schools and hospitals. Iran has responded by targeting Israeli and U.S. bases and assets across the Middle East, further escalating regional tensions and deepening global anxiety.

In moments like this, it is worth recalling the words of the Prophet Muhammad ď·ş:

There will come to the people years of treachery, when the liar will be regarded as honest and the honest man will be regarded as a liar; the traitor will be regarded as faithful and the faithful man will be regarded as a traitor; and the Ruwaibidah will decide matters." It was asked, "Who are the Ruwaibidah?" He said, "Vile and base men who control the affairs of the people. (Sunan Ibn Majah 4036)
As geopolitical narratives compete and experts offer differing analyses, Ramadan calls us to something deeper than political reaction. It calls us to strengthen our iman, to anchor our hearts in Allah, and to reflect on His guidance:

Allah is sufficient for us, and He is the best Disposer of affairs - "Hasbunallahu wa ni'mal wakil" (Qur'an 3:173).

"O you who have believed, seek help through patience and prayer. Indeed, Allah is with the patient." (Qur'an 2:153)

"And whoever relies upon Allah, then He is sufficient for him." (Qur'an 65:3)

In every moment of uncertainty and fear, believers are called to calm reflection, to patience, and to principled engagement, trusting that whatever unfolds remains within Allah's wisdom.

During times of conflict and deaths, Islam's moral compass remains clear: the sanctity of human life, human dignity, and justice must remain at the center of our consciousness. Ramadan teaches restraint, compassion, and moral clarity.

As families gather to break their fasts, our hearts carry both spiritual longing and earnest prayers for peace. The yearning for justice; for those harmed by war, for innocent civilians, and for wisdom among leaders; reflects our shared humanity. True victory lies not in domination, but in mercy, justice, and the courage to advocate peace.
