HHRD Humanitarian Support Amid Rohingya Camp Fires

By: Blerta Kosumi   January 22, 2026

A devastating fire tore through Camp 16 of the Rohingya Refugee Settlement in Ukhiya, Cox's Bazar, at approximately 3:00 AM on January 20, 2026, leaving thousands of vulnerable refugees without shelter or necessities. According to field assessments, the blaze destroyed 450 shelters and partially damaged an additional 250, impacting nearly 800 households and at least 3,408 people.

Critical infrastructure was also lost in the fire, including water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) facilities, learning centers, mosques, and key access pathways. As a result, affected families are now facing severe winter exposure, food insecurity, and an increased risk of disease outbreaks.

Rohingya Refugees in Distress

The Rohingya refugee population, many of whom escaped the fire with nothing but the clothes they wear, are now facing severe risks, especially children, older adults, and pregnant women.

Without rapid intervention, the situation could deteriorate quickly, leading to preventable illness, hunger, and loss of life.

Emergency Relief Response: HHRD Mobilizes Aid

HHRD has mobilized an emergency response and is calling on the international community to act swiftly. Immediate humanitarian assistance is urgently needed in Camp 16, with priority needs including:
  • Winter clothing and blankets
  • Emergency food assistance
  • Essential non-food items
  • Safe temporary shelters, including eco-resilient bamboo structures
In addition, the rehabilitation of damaged WASH facilities and community infrastructure is critical to prevent disease and restore a minimum standard of living for affected families.

"Without swift support, more than 3,400 individuals face life-threatening risks from cold exposure, hunger, and disease," HHRD stated in its emergency appeal.

Rohingya Refugee Relief: Years of Compassion

HHRD's long-standing commitment to supporting displaced Rohingya communities highlights the need for sustained aid, including ongoing support for shelter, water, and hygiene to rebuild lives.

Families affected by the Camp 16 fire now urgently require both immediate emergency relief and longer-term rehabilitation. This includes temporary shelter, food, safe drinking water, clothing, bedding, hygiene kits, and repairs to damaged parts.

HHRD urges donors, partners, and humanitarian actors to respond quickly to this crisis and stand in solidarity with Rohingya families who have once again lost everything.
