We are seeking a highly qualified Lead Instructor to design and deliver a cohort-based online educational program addressing the ethical, jurisprudential, and societal challenges posed by advanced artificial intelligence, including AGI. The Lead Instructor will play a central role in translating complex technical and philosophical AI risks into clear, grounded Islamic ethical frameworks rooted in uṣūl al-fiqh and maqāṣid al-sharīʿah.

This role is ideal for a scholar-educator who is comfortable operating at the intersection of Islamic scholarship, contemporary ethics, and emerging technology, and who can engage religious leaders, educators, and professionals with clarity, rigor, and authority.

Key Responsibilities

Curriculum Leadership

  1. Lead the development and refinement of course modules on AI, agency, autonomy, moral responsibility, power concentration, and human dignity from an Islamic perspective
  2. Ensure curriculum accuracy, coherence, and alignment with Islamic jurisprudential methodologies
  3. Collaborate with AI safety experts and technologists to ensure technical concepts are faithfully represented without oversimplification

Instruction & Facilitation

  1. Serve as the primary instructor for live online sessions (lectures, seminars, guided discussions)
  2. Facilitate nuanced, respectful dialogue among scholars, imams, chaplains, educators, and professionals
  3. Guide participants in applying Islamic ethical reasoning to real-world AI scenarios and case studies

Scholarly Oversight

  1. Help formulate well-structured problem statements suitable for scholarly deliberation and fatwa councils
  2. Review and validate instructional materials, readings, and discussion prompts
  3. Support the articulation of clear Islamic "red lines" related to AI autonomy, manipulation, surveillance, militarization, and erosion of human agency

Program Contribution

  1. Participate in instructor planning meetings and post-cohort evaluations
  2. Contribute to written outputs such as briefing notes, summary frameworks, or teaching guides
  3. Advise on future iterations, scaling, or adaptation of the program for broader audiences

Required Qualifications

  1. Knowledge of Islamic studies, jurisprudence, ethics, or a closely related field
  2. Familiarity with uṣūl al-fiqh and maqāṣid al-sharīʿah
  3. Proven teaching or facilitation experience with adult learners or professional cohorts
  4. Ability to explain complex ideas clearly to non-specialist audiences

Preferred Qualifications

  1. Experience with the ethics of technology, AI, bioethics, or applied ethics
  2. Experience collaborating with interdisciplinary teams (technologists, policy experts, educators)
  3. Comfort teaching in online or hybrid formats
  4. Published writing, lectures, or public scholarship related to contemporary ethical issues

Personal Attributes

  1. Intellectual rigor combined with humility and openness
  2. Strong moral clarity without polemics
  3. Respect for scholarly plurality and principled disagreement
  4. Commitment to safeguarding human dignity and moral agency

Time Commitment & Compensation

  1. Estimated commitment: 160-190 hours spread over the program development and delivery cycle of 12 months
  2. Competitive stipend, commensurate with experience and scope of responsibility
