Umrah creates the connection with the Akhirah, for meeting with Allah SWT, as a mini spiritual rehearsal. It reminds pilgrims because that is their final destination, where their worldly life will be decided. In Islam, Akhirah (الآخرة) means the afterlife. This is the life which will last forever (eternal life). The Holy Quran and Hadiths repeatedly remind us that this world is temporarily; the real life is in the Hereafter.
"And this worldly life is nothing but amusement and play. Indeed, the home is the Hereafter - that is the true life, if only they knew." - Surah Al-Ankabut (29:64)
Umrah is a worship or pilgrimage, which Muslims perform by going to Makkah Mukarramah. For every believer, the journey of Umrah holds deep spiritual lessons. It is not obligatory like Hajj, but a Sunnah and Mustahab worship.
There are moments in it that remind us of the Akhirah and make a connection. But let's see how!
"The sins committed between one Umrah and the next are forgiven by Allah, and the reward of Hajj Mabrur is nothing except Paradise." - Sahih Al-Bukhari 1773 (Book 26:1)
This Hadith shows that performing Umrah wipes away sins, preparing a Muslim believer to meet Allah SWT in a purified state. Similarly, forgiveness purifies pilgrims' hearts and souls, meaning cleansing from sins, evil intentions, and the impurities of self.
When a Muslim performs Umrah, he gets a new spiritual freshness and peace. In the end (Akhirah), a clean heart and soul will be helpful, which is a part of the preparation for the afterlife.
In front of the Kaaba, pilgrims realise their short life and remember that the world is just a traveller's journey. During Tawaf and Sa'ee, every step reminds a person of his actions and intentions. Then they become more conscious, abandon bad deeds and increase good deeds.
For the sense of resurrection, the atmosphere of Masjid Al-Haram and Masjid An-Nabawi reminds Muslims that all people will one day stand before Allah SWT. This feeling triggers spiritual alertness and gives them both fear and hope.
"Call upon your Lord; He has said, 'I will respond to your prayers.' Those who are not heedless in My worship will find the path to salvation." - Surah Ghafir (40:60)
When a pilgrim prays from a pure heart, he evaluates his life and actions. With every prayer, he purifies his intentions, which is the core of preparation for the afterlife. Through regular prayers and worship, pilgrims get trained for accountability. Hence, the spiritual discipline keeps them conscious.
All the good deeds performed during Umrah are a spiritual training for Muslims. These deeds motives them, and the feeling of the afterlife increases in the heart. The rewards of such deeds of the pilgrims, which are 'Zakhira', will serve as a spiritual and physical support on the Last Day. This is how it connects with Akhirah preparation. So, you can strengthen your planning and accountability of Akhairah with Umrah.
A Harvard-led research paper published in 2008 also showed the same, that pilgrims after Hajj develop tolerance, peace, ethical transformation, and a passion for prayers.
Imaan is showing your faith and belief in Allah SWT and His Last Prophet Muhammad (ď·ş). Visiting the Kaaba and following the act of the Prophet (ď·ş) reinforces the faith of Muslims with real-life experiences. The realisation of Allah's SWT mercy and the Day of Judgement strengthens a pilgrim's faith. This Imaan prepares Muslims for the Last Day and the Hereafter.
Many pilgrims describe this journey as a turning point in their lives. Umrah organizers such as Labbaik Hajj Umrah help pilgrims dedicate themselves fully to worship by taking care of practical arrangements.
Overall, Umrah prepares Muslims for spirituality, sins are forgiven, piety is increased, one realises the truth of death and the afterlife, and the relationship with Allah SWT. This lesser pilgrimage also prepares a person spiritually for the Hereafter.
This increases the feeling of resurrection and also forgives the sins of the past. We hope that when Allah SWT allows you to perform Umrah, you will be able to understand its connection with the preparation of Akhirah.
