In a coordinated operation, Iraqi Counter-Terrorism Service (CTS) forces, in partnership with the U.S.-led international coalition, have confirmed the death of senior ISIS leader Omar Abdul Qader Bassam, also known by his nom de guerre Abdul Rahman al-Halabi. The operation took place early Friday morning in Syria's central Hama province.

Al-Halabi, identified as the head of ISIS's external operations and security, was implicated in several high-profile attacks, including the 2013 bombing of the Iranian embassy in Beirut, which resulted in over 20 fatalities. Additionally, he was linked to thwarted terrorist plots in Europe and the United States, which were disrupted through international intelligence efforts.

The U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) stated that al-Halabi posed a direct threat to U.S. interests and had been actively involved in planning operations targeting Western nations. CENTCOM reaffirmed its commitment to dismantling ISIS's external operations network.

Iraq's CTS highlighted the significance of this operation, describing it as a "qualitative strike" that dealt a substantial blow to ISIS's leadership structure. The CTS emphasized the importance of continued cooperation with international partners in combating terrorism.

While ISIS lost its territorial "caliphate" in 2019, the group continues to pose a threat through sleeper cells and decentralized networks. Analysts caution that despite leadership losses, ISIS remains capable of conducting sporadic attacks and destabilizing fragile regions.
