LONDON / PARIS, July 9, 2025 - In a powerful joint statement at a high-level bilateral summit, France and the United Kingdom have called for an immediate and unconditional ceasefire in Gaza, the release of all hostages, and renewed efforts toward recognizing a Palestinian state as the only path to lasting peace in the Middle East.

French President Emmanuel Macron addressed the escalating humanitarian crisis in Gaza, stating:

"Calling for a ceasefire without condition is our moral responsibility. It's not just diplomacy-it's about human lives. Europe must show there are no double standards when it comes to defending life and justice."

Macron emphasized that the two-state solution remains the only viable framework for peace and regional security, while warning that the continuing dehumanization and violence in Gaza threaten long-term stability across the Middle East.

The speech also reflected growing frustration within Europe over the war's unchecked devastation and a lack of political progress. Macron added that recognizing Palestine is no longer just symbolic-it is essential to reopen political dialogue and move away from purely military responses.

Alongside Middle East concerns, both Macron and UK leaders reaffirmed their defense partnership, pledging to dramatically expand joint military capabilities under the Lancaster House treaties, now marking their 15th year. Together, France and the UK represent 40% of Europe's military budget.

"Our alliance is stronger than ever," Macron stated, "and we must rise to the occasion amid global threats, nuclear powers, and the return of major conflict to Europe."

The leaders also addressed climate change, reaffirming their commitment to phasing out fossil fuels and defending science against growing anti-environmental rhetoric ahead of COP30 in Berlin.

As both countries prepare to invest further in European defense, climate resilience, and international diplomacy, this summit is being seen as a defining moment in reasserting European leadership in a rapidly shifting global order.
