Tazkiyah, or the purification of the soul, is an essential concept in Islamic spirituality. The believers in Islam do every act of worship to gain the ultimate purification that will bring them closer to Allah Almighty.

Every Muslim dreams of being completely purified from sins and bad qualities. And Umrah is the pilgrimage that allows you to cleanse your soul. The concept of Tazkiyah in the context of Umrah is quite prominent and is something you will surely want to know about if you are going for the pilgrimage soon.

UK Muslims can book cost-effective and convenient Umrah packages. You are among the many lucky ones who booked Umrah packages from Birmingham this year. If so, it is time that you start learning about the pilgrimage. Let’s start with the concept of purification.

What is Tazkiyah?

Tazkiyah can refer to various meanings, from purification and growth to righteousness. For Muslims, nothing is more critical than conforming to Allah's will. We try not to sin and lose ourselves in the world's distractions. But we are humans and can sin.

However, as long as we put effort into purifying ourselves and repenting for our sins, Allah Almighty will forgive us. And Tazkiyah is all about getting rid of all the sins and purifying your soul. It also involves detaching yourself from worldly distractions and molding yourself to Allah’s will to succeed hereafter. In the Holy Quran, Allah Almighty says:

“He has succeeded who purifies it, and he has failed who corrupts it.” (Qur’an, Surah Ash-Shams, 91:9-10)

Tazkiyah means eliminating impurities from one's soul, including greed, arrogance, envy, and heedlessness. It also means instilling virtues like humility, patience, sincerity, and gratitude.

Umrah as the Physical Journey with Spiritual Goals

We know Umrah as the pilgrimage. It is a physical journey to the sacred house of Allah Almighty in Makkah. But Umrah is undoubtedly much more than that. This physical journey has the potential to transform your heart, cleanse your soul, and give you a chance to start your life anew.

There are many spiritual goals of the Umrah. This voluntary act of devotion to Allah Almighty is not obligatory but has immense spiritual rewards and impact on the lives of the pilgrims.

Every ritual and stage of Umrah guides the pilgrims to spiritual purification. From donning the Ihram garment to shaving your head or trimming your hair, every stage of Umrah is about purifying yourself from evil and sins and cleansing your soul.

Umrah is also the ultimate chance at redemption. You can ask for the forgiveness of all your mortal sins with a pure heart. Remember that our Creator is the most merciful, and He will grant your forgiveness if you have pure intentions.

Rituals of Umrah and the Concept of Tazkiyah

Ihram - The Ultimate State of Purity

Before you arrive at the Holy Kaaba for your pilgrimage rituals, you must enter a state of purity called Ihram. You will not only have to purify yourself physically and wear specific clothing, but you will also have to purify yourself spiritually. It prepares you for the pilgrimage. Ihram is a shift in consciousness that makes you realise that you will soon be the guest of the Almighty.

You will feel like your worldly identity means nothing when you wear the white garment. You are here just as a common servant of the Almighty and nothing else. This is where spiritual purification begins. You learn humility and detachment in this phase of Umrah, a prominent part of Tazkiyah.

Tawaf - Worship at the Divine House

Tawaf around the Holy Kaaba is one of the most spiritual acts of worship. What can be more spiritual than circling the holy house of the Almighty and supplicating? As you circle this divine cubic structure, you will feel your heart pulled to the Almighty. It shows you that your life should and must revolve around Allah Almighty.

You can take this time to reflect on your life. If you haven't already, you must learn that Allah is the only axis around which your life must revolve. Also, reorient your priorities and let go of distractions.

Sa’i - Remembering Hajar’s Struggle

The next Umrah ritual is Sa’i, in which pilgrims commemorate Hajar’s struggles to find water in the desert for her infant. This ritual reflects human life struggles and teaches us many life lessons. From patience and gratefulness to putting firm faith and trust in the Almighty, you learn many virtues and spiritual lessons while performing this Umrah ritual.

You can embrace your trials and see them as a form of purification. Just learn to have unwavering faith in Allah Almighty, and He will surely help you miraculously in every life matter.

Tahallul - Symbol of Renewal

While you have spiritual purity and transformation, this Umrah also changes you physically. Tahallul serves as a symbol of physical renewal. While you cut or shave your hair, you will feel like you are letting go of all the bad habits, evil, and sins. This gives you a chance to embrace your new self and decide to stay in this state of Tazkiyah from now on.

Final Words

If you have secured an Umrah package, you are well on your way to joining the fortunate UK Muslims preparing for this sacred journey. Hopefully, this blog on the concept of Tazkiyah in the context of Umrah has inspired and motivated you towards spiritual revival. Get ready to embrace your new self and eliminate negative patterns from your life to experience Tazkiyah through Umrah.
