5 Fun Sunnahs to Follow on Eid

Eid is a special time of joy and gratitude. But did you know that by following the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), you can make your Eid even more blessed? Here are five authentic Sunnahs to follow on Eid, backed by strong hadith references.

1. Taking a Bath (Ghusl) Before Eid Prayer

It is Sunnah to perform ghusl (ritual bath) before heading out for the Eid prayer. This helps us feel fresh and clean as we prepare for this special day.

Authentic Reference:
📖 Ibn Umar (RA) said:
"The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) used to perform ghusl on the day of Eid before going out to pray."

2. Eating Dates Before Eid-ul-Fitr Prayer

Before going for the Eid-ul-Fitr prayer, it is Sunnah to eat an odd number of dates. This shows that fasting has ended and is a way to follow the Prophet's example.

Authentic Reference:
📖 Anas ibn Malik (RA) said:
"The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) would not go out on the morning of Eid-ul-Fitr until he had eaten some dates, and he would eat an odd number of them."

3. Reciting the Takbir

Saying the Takbir (words of glorifying Allah) is one of the greatest Sunnahs of Eid. It should be recited from the night of Eid until the Eid prayer.

🔹 Takbir of Eid:
"Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, La ilaha illa Allah, wa Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar wa lillahi'l-hamd."

📖 Allah says in the Quran:
"And proclaim the greatness of Allah for having guided you, so that you may be grateful."

📖 Ibn Umar (RA) reported:
"The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) used to say the Takbir on the day of Eid from Fajr until the Imam came out."
🔹 [Sunan Ibn Majah 1278]

4. Attending the Eid Prayer

The Eid prayer is one of the most important Sunnahs of the day. Even women and children are encouraged to attend, as it is a day of unity and blessings.

📖 The Prophet (ﷺ) said:
"The Eid prayer is Wajib (necessary) upon every Muslim."

5. Taking a Different Route Home

After performing the Eid prayer, it is Sunnah to return home using a different route than the one you took to the prayer. This simple act spreads the spirit of Eid to more people.

📖 Jabir ibn Abdullah (RA) said:
"On the day of Eid, the Prophet (ﷺ) would take a different route back home after the prayer."
