What Kids Wonder About Fasting: Answers to Your Questions!

We recently asked kids if they had any questions about fasting or Islam, and we’re so excited to answer them here! Whether you're curious about when you should start fasting or wondering about other aspects of Islam, we’re here to help with kind, thoughtful answers.
🌙 Question from Maryam, Age 7:
"Can I fast when I am seven? And what age should you start fasting?"
💡 Answer: Fasting is a beautiful part of Islam, and while it becomes obligatory when you reach puberty, it’s wonderful to start practicing it at a younger age! Kids like you, Maryam, can begin by fasting for part of the day or a few hours, especially during Ramadan.
You can gradually increase the time as you grow older. It’s about learning patience, self-discipline, and building good habits, and Allah loves when we try our best!
A hadith to inspire you:
The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) said:
"Command your children to pray when they are seven, and when they are ten, encourage them to fast." (Abu Dawood)
This hadith shows that while fasting becomes obligatory at puberty, children can start practicing fasting before that age. Parents can gently encourage kids to try fasting and get used to it, helping them grow in their love for this beautiful act of worship. 🌙
🌙 Question from Zayd, Age 8:
"Why do we fast in Ramadan?"
💡 Answer: Fasting in Ramadan teaches us patience, kindness, and self-control. It also helps us understand what it’s like for those who don’t have enough food, and it brings us closer to Allah. During Ramadan, the rewards for good deeds are even greater, and fasting helps purify our hearts and souls.
A short story:
The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) said, “Whoever fasts during Ramadan with faith and seeking reward, all his previous sins will be forgiven.” (Sahih Bukhari) This shows us how fasting helps us become better people and get closer to Allah. So, we fast to grow spiritually and gain Allah’s mercy. 🌙
🌙 Question from Amina, Age 9:
"Can I drink when I am fasting if I feel really thirsty?"
💡 Answer: When you're fasting, it's important to stay hydrated before the fast starts, during Suhoor. But once the fast begins, we should not eat or drink until it's time to break our fast at Maghrib. Fasting teaches us patience and self-control, and Allah knows when we’re doing our best.
If you ever feel really thirsty or unwell, remember to talk to your parents. They can help guide you, and always know that your health is the most important thing. Allah is very merciful, and He knows what's in your heart.
A Quranic verse to inspire you:
Allah (SWT) says:
"Allah does not intend to make difficulty for you, but to purify you and complete His favor upon you that you may be grateful." (Quran 5:6)
This verse reminds us that Allah doesn’t want fasting to be too hard on us. If it’s difficult for you, He knows, and He wants you to take care of yourself while keeping your heart focused on Him. 🌟
