The belief in the Second Coming of Jesus is a significant aspect of Islamic eschatology. This belief is rooted in both the Quran and Hadith, which provide insights into the role Jesus will play in the events leading up to the Day of Judgment.

This article explores the Islamic perspective on the Second Coming of Jesus, supported by relevant references.

1. Quranic References

The Quran addresses the life and mission of Jesus, emphasizing his unique status as a prophet and messenger of Allah. One of the key verses related to his Second Coming is:

  • Surah An-Nisa (4:157-158): "And for their saying, 'Indeed, we have killed the Messiah, Jesus, the son of Mary, the messenger of Allah.' And they did not kill him, nor did they crucify him; but another was made to resemble him to them. And indeed, those who differ over it are in doubt about it. They have no knowledge of it except the following of assumption. And they did not kill him, for certain. Rather, Allah raised him to Himself. And ever is Allah Exalted in Might and Wise." (Quran 4:157-158)

This verse indicates that Jesus was not killed but was raised to Allah, suggesting that he will return to fulfill his prophetic mission.

Another relevant verse is:

  • Surah Al-Imran (3:55): "Mention when Allah said, 'O Jesus, indeed I will take you and raise you to Myself and purify you from those who disbelieve and make those who follow you in submission to Allah alone superior to those who disbelieve until the Day of Resurrection. Then to Me is your return, and I will judge between you concerning that in which you used to differ.'" (Quran 3:55)

This verse reinforces the belief that Jesus was taken up by Allah and will return to judge humanity.

2. Hadith References

The Hadith literature provides further details about the Second Coming of Jesus. Several narrations describe his return, the circumstances surrounding it, and the events that will unfold.

  • Sahih al-Bukhari: Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "By Him in Whose Hands my soul is, surely (Jesus), the son of Mary will soon descend amongst you and will judge mankind justly (as a Just Ruler); he will break the Cross and kill the pigs and there will be no Jizya (i.e., taxation taken from non-Muslims). Money will be in abundance so that nobody will accept it..." (Sahih al-Bukhari 3448).

This Hadith highlights Jesus's role as a just ruler upon his return, where he will abolish falsehood and establish justice.

  • Sahih Muslim: Another narration states: "How will you be when the son of Mary (i.e., Jesus) descends amongst you and your Imam is among you?" (Sahih Muslim 3449).

This indicates that Jesus will return to a community of believers and will lead them in prayer, signifying his esteemed position among Muslims.

  • Musnad Ahmad: It is reported that Jesus will descend at the white minaret in the eastern side of Damascus, wearing two garments lightly dyed, and will come as a sign of the approaching Day of Judgment. He will confront the Dajjal (the False Messiah) and defeat him, restoring peace and justice to the world (Musnad Ahmad).

3. The Role of Jesus in the End Times

Islamic eschatology describes a series of events that will occur during the time of Jesus's return. He will confront the Dajjal, who represents the ultimate deception and trial for humanity. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) stated:

  • Sahih Muslim: "Jesus will pursue the Dajjal until he catches him at the gate of Ludd and kills him" (Sahih Muslim 2937a).

This confrontation signifies the triumph of truth over falsehood.

Following the defeat of the Dajjal, Jesus will lead a period of peace and prosperity. The Hadith narrates that during his reign, there will be an abundance of wealth, and people will no longer need to give charity, as there will be no one in need (Sahih al-Bukhari 3448).

The Second Coming of Jesus (peace be upon him) is a profound belief in Islam, emphasizing his role as a prophet and a just ruler who will restore faith and justice in the world.

The Quran and Hadith provide a comprehensive understanding of this event, highlighting the significance of Jesus's return in the context of Islamic eschatology. Muslims believe that his return will be a pivotal moment in the history of humanity, culminating in the establishment of truth and the final judgment by Allah.

This belief fosters a sense of hope and anticipation among Muslims, as they await the fulfillment of these prophecies and the ultimate triumph of good over evil.
