Ceasefire, They Say

By: Ershad Khan   February 21, 2025

They say It's ceasefire now

You don't need to panic Or be terribly afraid anymore Don't have to hold your breath And run for your life From flattened North To down South Or to the Mediterranean shore

Don't have to hide from drones To reach illusive "Safe Zones."

Don't have to rush To the crowded corridors Of destroyed hospitals To look for shelter Few drops of pure water Or to bite on a dried, stale bread

They say It's ceasefire now

Your fatigued legs That walked endlessly For four hundred days Can finally rest now In this eerie, quiet place

You may even dare to dream While your numb, broken heart Wants to let out Suppressed, endless scream

Then let it be... Let all of you step out From the shameless rubels Of bricks and concrete Let the dead bodies pile up Desolate, barren streets!

So come out Just slowly and gently No one will notice you We've forgotten all so conveniently

They say It's peaceful now

But the cynic in me Serene, tranquil days It quite doesn't see

A life that grew in Narrow, open prison A life humiliated Day and night, in all seasons A life crippled by Snipers and drones...

What ceasefire means to her When she can't have A lasting, free "Safe Zone!"
