Conditions ‘not yet in place’ for safe return of Lebanese citizens to south: UN officials
The United Nations and UNIFIL have issued a joint statement expressing concern over the ongoing violations of United Nations Security Council Resolution 1701, which continues to affect Lebanon and Israel.
Despite efforts outlined in a November understanding, the conditions for the safe return of citizens to their villages along the Blue Line remain unmet. Daily violations of the resolution are still being reported, and both Hezbollah and the Israeli Army have blamed each other for failing to uphold the ceasefire agreement.
UNIFIL, which has been supporting the Lebanese Army’s redeployment in southern Lebanon, is working to ensure that the Lebanese forces regain control over areas previously occupied by Israeli Defense Forces (IDF).
Although there has been progress, including the discovery of ammunition caches and the removal of mines, UNIFIL is concerned about the ongoing presence of the IDF in certain regions. The organization is also assisting in providing humanitarian support for local populations returning to their villages.
The situation remains dire, with casualties reported as people attempt to return to the south. UNIFIL continues to work alongside international stakeholders, including the US and France, in efforts to find a resolution to the crisis.
